The child of an enslaved Haitian, Thomas attained the highest rank available to a black man in Europe when he was 31. Despite his accomplishments, a disagreement over his Egypt campaign forced Thomas out of the army. He was incarcerated for two years, dying soon after his departure from prison. Marie Louis Labouret, Alexandre’s mother, did everything she could to secure a solid education for her son.

But the author’s time at Abbe Gregoire’s School was short-lived. Once he landed a position at a local notary, he left. After immersing himself in literature in the 1820s, Alexandre made a name for himself as an author of plays, comedies, and dramas.

Soon after, he turned his attention to novels and short stories. The author’s work tackled a variety of subjects, including scandals, crime, and history. Contemporary readers are well-acquainted with his stories, including ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and ‘The Three Musketeers’, even though most have never heard of Alexandre Dumas.

The author was so successful that he built a home in France (The Chateau de Monte Cristo). But the sanctuary was more of a curse than a gift. Alexandre spent too much time entertaining.
Before long, his creditors came calling, and the author was forced to escape to Belgium and Russia. Despite the downward turn in his fortunes, Alexandre kept writing. In fact, he wrote travel books that drew inspiration from his life in exile.

In 1870, he finally died. Alexandre was living in Puys, France, at the time. His body remained at the Villers-Cotterets cemetery until 2002, when it was moved to the Pantheon (Paris).
The location houses the remains of Alexandre’s peers, including Victor Hugo and Emile Zola.

Best Alexandre Dumas Books

Alexandre married Marie Laure Catherine Labay. She gave him a son. Later on, he married Ida Ferrier. The author had numerous affairs. From what historians have seen, he had a daughter as well (Marie Alexandrine). Alexandre’s best books include:

The Count of Monte Cristo: Edmond Dante was wronged. His enemies thought he was defeated and for a good reason. Edmond was in prison. As far as most people were concerned, he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

But Edmond had other plans. He knew a secret. Hidden someone on the Isle of Monte Cristo was a substantial treasure. Edmond had one goal: to escape and claim the prize for himself.

Once he succeeded, he would use his newfound fortune to destroy the three men who ruined his life. Edmond had an arduous journey ahead of him. But he had no intention of giving up until his thirst for revenge was satisfied.

The Three Musketeers: The first novel in ‘The d’Artagnan Romances’ takes readers back to the 1600s. d’Artagnan, the hero at the center of this tale, wanted to join the Musketeers of the Guard, an elite branch of the military. His plans took an interesting turn when he met Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, the most formidable members of the Guard.

Now, D’Artagnan must disentangle himself from a series of increasingly complicated scenarios. Wherever he goes, the musketeers follow. And wherever they go, trouble follows.

This novel mirrors Robinhood and other stories of that ilk. It features all the standard tropes, including a foolish king, a corrupt religious figure, and a philandering queen.

The musketeers are a product of their era. They have amoral and misogynistic attributes. But Alexandre Dumas forces readers to perceive their antics through a comedic lens. The goal is to present them as righteous knights trying to right the wrongs of the land.

When he was alive, Alexandre presented The Three Musketeers as heroes from various recovered manuscripts. He claimed that some elements of his story were based on historical texts.

He wrote the first book in collaboration with Auguste Maquet. They wrote the sequels together. She would suggest plot outlines. Alexandre would expand on them.
