Best Alys Clare Books

Alys is not a real person. The pseudonym belongs to Elizabeth, an author from Cambridge. Alys’ best books include:

Fortune Like The Moon: Trouble was brewing in Hawkenlye Abbey. A young nun was dead. Someone had cut Gunnora’s throat. It was hardly the most peaceful way to go for a nun. But the Abbey had plenty of suspects.

Richard Plantagenet had commanded English prisons to release their inhabitants. No one could ask for more fitting suspects for the murder. But Josse d’Acquin had no intention of jumping to baseless conclusions. As the new king’s knight, he was tasked with investigating the crime and identifying the true culprit.

Josse was surprised to find that Hawkenlye Abbey wasn’t quite the sanctuary everyone promised. Instead, it was beset by lust and greed. Fortunately, he wasn’t alone in his search. The knight could rely on the help of the beautiful Abbes Helewise.

‘Fortune Like The Moon’ is the first novel in the Hawkenlye Mysteries series. The book takes readers to 1157. Josse is investigating a murder on behalf of King Richard. Queen Eleanor, Richard’s mother, designed Hawkenlye Abbey. Eleanor pushed King Richard to release all the prisoners, and now some nuns are dead.

The gesture wasn’t entirely altruistic. Richard was on the verge of being crowned king, and he wanted to buy some popularity by releasing his incarcerated subjects. But the gesture backfires when the nuns die.

Richard doesn’t want the public to link the murders to his actions, but that is the only rational outcome if the rest of the kingdom learns that one or more of the prisoners the King released committed murder.

Josse is deployed to resolve the issue. The veteran is the perfect candidate for the role because he is quiet and observant. He joins forces with a wise Abbess to find the killers. The pair have a strong bond nurtured by their mutual respect for one another.

Ashes of the Elements: Abbess Helewise has a strong head on her shoulders. She doesn’t succumb to pressure, and neither is she quick to surrender to superstitious murmuring. A lumberjack died.

Because his body was found in the Wealken forest, the locals have already assumed the worst. They think the Forest People killed the lumberjack. Normally, the Abbess wouldn’t dismiss the wisdom of the locals so easily.

But this time around, she can’t take them seriously because the Forest People are mythical. As far as any rational person is concerned, they don’t exist. Nonetheless, a man is dead, and something real and rational killed him.

She is determined to find the culprit. Having chosen to ignore the supernatural answer, the Abbess has turned to her friend Josse d’Acquin for an alternative explanation.

The Abbess and the French soldier of fortune are well-acquainted with one another. The Abbess trusts Josse because the solder has assisted her on numerous occasions.

For his part, Josse wants to protect the Abbey. The person that killed the lumberjack is a threat to the people under the Abbess’ care. For that reason, Josse has chosen to venture into the forest.

Just as the soldier expected, the forest is not haunted. However, what he finds is no less terrifying.

‘Ashes of the Elements’ is the second novel in the Hawkenyle Mysteries series. Like the first book, this one takes readers to the era of Richard the Lionheart. Once again, the Abbess is caught up in a mystery. This time around, she trips over the remains of a local man at the edge of a forest.

Someone used a spear with a decorative point to murder him. The Sheriff wants to blame the Forest People, but Helewise wants a second opinion, so she enlists the help of Josse.

They find evidence of poachers, an ancient treasure recently uncovered, and pagan rituals, not to mention a connection to the residents of the Abbey. As they investigate the murder, Helewise and Josse’s relationship grows.
