In fact, he wasn’t a fan of video games in general. So he completely dismissed the video game adaptation when it was first proposed to him. He was happy to sign the rights to his characters over for a decent sum of money because he did not expect the video game series to garner much success.
He was wrong. In the years that followed, people began to associate ‘The Witcher’ with the video games rather than the novels Andrej Sapkowski had written. The author kept running into fans of the series who thought that he had simply written a novelization of the games rather than originating the characters.
Some went so far as to suggest that he owed his career to the video games because they had essentially brought some much-needed fame to his Polish novels. Suffice it to say, the author wasn’t amused. Because he had sold the rights to his characters outright, he wasn’t entitled to any of the profits from the video games.
But even worse, he began to envision a future where ‘The Witcher’, the name of his fantasy series, would be solely associated with the video games rather than the novels. He realized that a time was coming when fans of the game wouldn’t even know that the novels existed.
While this caused him considerable frustration in the beginning, he eventually reached a point where he could appreciate the merits of the video game series. Andrzej will be the first person to tell you that he still holds some disdain for the adaptation. And yet he also accepts the storytelling quality of the video games.
The writer was a late bloomer. At 38, Andrzej had a degree in Economics. He also spoke several languages. And yet he was a traveling salesman that spent his days selling furs. Born in 1948 in Lodz, Poland, Andrzej was an avid reader of fantasy.
He would often visit the bookshops in his vicinity to look for the latest installments in his favorite fantasy series. His foray into publishing was completely accidental. A Polish Magazine called Fantastyka held a short story competition to which the author submitted a 30-page manuscript.
He did not expect his story to win. Polish society dismissed fantasy as drivel meant for children. So Andrzej had no real confidence in his chances. But ‘Wiedzmin’ (which was eventually translated into ‘The Witcher’) won the Third-Place Prize. More importantly, the public loved it. They wanted more. So the author gave them more. At first, he wrote short stories that attempted to bring order to the fictional world he was building.
Eventually, these stories were collected into two volumes that were published in 1992 and 1993. From there, Andrzej’s popularity continued to grow. It was this outpouring of public support that drew the attention of video game developers, eventually putting the author’s fantasy series on the map.

Best Andrzej Sapkowski Books
The popularity of the author’s Witcher books is such that they have been translated into nearly two dozen languages, with some of the best titles in his bibliography including:
Blood of Elves: The peace is over. Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves, and Men are fighting each other. But Geralt of Rivia has other concerns. A prophesized child is on his way, one who will change the world for good or evil.
Time of Contempt: Geralt of Rivia is like no other man. It isn’t just his hair and eyes that make him a standout. Geralt is The Witcher. With his training and elixirs, he is one of the most dangerous creatures in the world. Fortunately for everyone, he only kills the fiends and demons that walk the land.
