B.J. Daniels is an American author that writes romance novels. Born in Texas, Daniels was 8-years-old when she decided that she wanted to become an author. Her dream did not come true, at least not immediately. Daniels did not know how to become an author.

She made several attempts at writing but she couldn’t get past the beginning. As a young adult, the author tried her hand at a variety of jobs before she finally decided to find a career that would enable her to indulge her passion for the written word. Daniels was 30 at the time.

She became a reporter, landing a position at a local newspaper. The job wasn’t exactly lucrative. Daniels was working part-time and making minimum wage. But working as a reporter allowed the author to hone her craft. Because she had deadlines to meet, it taught her discipline.

She became a much faster writer than she had been before she joined the newspaper. Finally, Daniels decided to dip her toes into fiction. She started by producing short stories for ‘Woman’s World’.

What started as an experiment became something more. Daniels had too many ideas, so she kept writing until she had accumulated dozens of short stories. Her first novel was ‘Odd Man Out’. She managed to sell it to Harlequin Intrigue, though the task wasn’t easy.

When she first heard about the Intrigue Line from Harlequin, it fascinated her because she liked the idea of mixing romance with mystery. So she wrote a story set on Hebgen Lake. The Harlequin Editor that received her submission liked the author’s manuscript.

The letter that Daniels received in response complemented her pacing and characters. However, the editor did not appreciate the rest of her book. Daniels was encouraged to rewrite the manuscript, which she did. Though, the task was so arduous that she was tempted to quit on multiple occasions. But she persevered.

Her hard work paid off. Not only was ‘Odd Man Out’ published but it received awards recognition. That was all the encouragement Daniels needed to write and publish her next book.

As a successful published author, writing is always difficult for Daniels. She has heard other writers argue that each book is easier to write than the one before. But she doesn’t necessarily agree. From what she has seen, sitting down to write a book is always hard work.

But Daniels does it all the same. Her goal is to write ten pages every single day. This is easier said than done because life tends to interfere with her plans. This is why she tries to get some pages written in the morning before she does anything else.

She uses the first few chapters to create the foundation for her story. She will keep rewriting them until she gets them right. Once she has a solid foundation, she is confident that the rest of the novel will fall into place.

Because she writes by the seat of her pants, she will occasionally write herself into a corner. She relies on her characters to bail her out.
