Steve was a law student at the time. After a long stint with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Barbara joined the Belmont Herald, for whom she worked as a reporter and photographer.

She had given birth to her first child by this point. At the time, publishing was not part of the author’s grand plan. Barbara had a vivid imagination as a child, but she never shared her thoughts with other people.

For the most part, she had a great childhood that included piano and flute lessons and ballroom dancing. The death of her mother changed everything. It was the most significant occurrence of her young life. Eventually, Barbara started concocting stories surrounding her mother’s death.

But she kept those stories to herself, partly because her family members had pursued practical careers, and she knew that she had to do the same. The fact that she had an affinity for the written word meant nothing. The notion of pursuing writing as a career never crossed her mind.

The author is not afraid to admit that she did not have a particular career in mind when she went to college. From what she saw, no one expected women from her era to think about careers. She went on to pursue an MA in sociology, but only because her husband was starting law school during the first years of their marriage, and they needed the money.

Barbara hoped that the M.A. would get her a better-paying job. Her foray into publishing began when she joined the Belmont Herald. Initially, Barbara was primarily a photographer. She would write copy for her pictures, but writing was never the priority.

Over time, Barbara realized that her writing skills were far superior to her photography. In the aftermath of her twins’ birth, she found an article profiling a trio of female writers. The article inspired the author to give writing a shot.

She plotted and wrote her first manuscript, selling it soon after. Once the book was published (in 1980), she followed it up with another and another until she had accumulated a sizable bibliography constituting dozens of novels. Even though she started her career by penning fiction, Barbara’s nonfiction work has gathered a decent following over the years. Many people relate to the contents of ‘Uplift,’ a volume that uses Barbara’s experiences as a breast cancer survivor.

She received her breast cancer diagnosis early on, and for a time, she was convinced that she would die just like her mother. But she underwent treatment and recovered, using the lessons she learned to help other cancer patients.

Best Barbara Delinsky Books

The author writes character-driven stories about ordinary people contending with everyday challenges. Barbara’s best books include:

Not My Daughter: Susan’s relationship with her daughter imploded the day Lily announced her pregnancy. The single mother was overwhelmed, especially when she realized that Lily was not the only high school junior that had fallen pregnant.

Susan had done everything she could to keep Lily on the right path. She couldn’t understand what had motivated Lily and her best friends to shame her.

With her detractors using the situation to raise questions about her competence as the high school principal, Susan must re-evaluate her life.

While My Sister Sleeps: Molly and Robin were different. Molly was a horticulturist, while her sister was a world-class runner. They adored one another. And yet, when Robin suffered a heart attack, Molly was forced to confront their relationship’s complexities.

Despite their bond, Molly had spent her life in Robin’s shadow, and she couldn’t ignore the resentment it had caused. But now, Robin is vulnerable, and the doctors do not expect her to regain consciousness. Molly must carry the ensuing responsibilities.

Her parents can barely cope. Her brother’s calm demeanor is making things worse. Molly has to make the tough decisions. She thought she was up to the task. But then she made a discovery that turned her life upside down.
