Blake Crouch Anthologies
Crouch knew from the age of 6 that he wanted to write fiction. He admits that the field is challenging. It doesn’t offer any guarantees. As a father, he would never encourage his children to pursue publishing. He believes that aspiring writers should bolster their resume with skills they can fall back on when times become tough because the publishing industry is simply too unpredictable.
That being said, Crouch knew what he wanted to do from a young age and he made every effort possible to make his dreams a reality. Crouch wrote short stories in middle school and he started writing his first novel in high school.
He also further honed his abilities by scaring his brother with scary stories during bedtime. By the time he was 14, Crouch was already penning sequels to Star Wars movies. Suffice it to say, the writer’s eventual success was a long time in the making,
His first published novel was ‘Desert Places’. St. Martin’s Press gave Crouch his first book deal in 2001. Like many authors, a query letter got him an agent. She read and appreciated his manuscripts, eventually selling his first novel.
He was pretty optimistic about his prospects at the time. Crouch assumed that his first book deal would pave the way for greater success down the line. But he was wrong. While he wrote and published additional novels with St. Martin’s Press in the years that followed, his sales figures were abysmal.
For a time, Crouch was forced to contemplate the possibility that his publishing career would die out just a few years after it started. The diminishing financial performance of his work seemingly supported this conclusion.
It took the emergence of Kindle to give the author hope. eBooks changed everything for Blake Crouch. Realizing that he had a better chance of reaching more readers on his own, he republished his previous novels.
The transformation was immediate. Crouch’s sales figures rose dramatically. When he wrote ‘Wayward Pines’, he did not hesitate to publish it through Amazon, achieving even greater success. The author eventually returned to traditional publishing. He sold ‘Dark Matter’. his next novel to Penguin Random House.
More readers discovered Crouch’s work when his ‘Wayward Pines’ novels became a TV show. He pitched the idea to a few produces before Donald De Line took an interest. He pointed Crouch in the direction of Chad Hodge who loved the book. They crafted a pilot that Hodge took to his contacts, eventually securing M. Night Shyamalan’s involvement.
Shyamalan signed on as an executive producer. He also directed the first episode. The success of Wayward Pines encouraged Crouch to pursue additional opportunities in the world of movies and television.
