Carly Phillips is a bestselling American author that writes romance novels. Born in 1965, she attended Boston University School of Law. After graduation, she became a licensed attorney, plying her trade at a law firm in New York City. But she couldn’t handle the mental and emotional pressure.

So, she left to start a family. As a child, the author read passionately. She continued to feed the habit as an adult, reading one hardcover a day. But once her first child was born, Carly’s husband told her that they couldn’t afford her hardcovers.

It never occurred to her to visit the library. Instead, she went to the local bookstore, hoping to discover some new authors whose books would sweep her off her feet. It was at this stage that she stumbled across writers like Catherine Coulter that introduced her to romance publications like Harlequin.

Her newfound love for the genre brought with it a desire to write. Because she knew next to nothing about writing and publishing, she went to the library and began her research.

She tried using her old computer from law school, but it was outdated. So, she asked her husband for a replacement, assuring the man that she had no intention of quitting her newly discovered passion for writing. She also asked for a printer.

Because Carly started writing before the advent of indie publishing, her only option was to submit her manuscripts to a New York Publisher. She spent the next few years doing just that: writing, revising and submitting.

And in the process, she accumulated numerous rejection letters, none of which stopped her. The author’s objective was realistic. Rather than snagging a publishing deal straight away, her goal was to receive a rejection letter asking her to revise and resubmit her manuscript.

A response in that vein meant progress, which is why she sought it out week after week. Finally, five years after embarking on her journey, the author encountered Brenda Chin from Harlequin, who worked with her until her first novel was published four years later.

By 2002, Carly had secured an agent. But even after selling a trilogy to Warner Books, the author wasn’t necessarily popular. She was still fighting for the spotlight with other romance authors.
But then Kelly Ripa came into her life and changed everything. The celebrity started a book club and supercharged Carly’s career by picking her novel, ‘The Bachelor.’ Without the internet, she had to rely on word of mouth to grow her fanbase. Kelly Ripa’s shoutout gave her career a massive boost.

Later on, when the internet entered the equation, Carly joined the indie publishing industry. Self-publishing scared the author initially because she couldn’t imagine balancing her activities as a writer with the duties of a publisher. But just like before, she started reading books and taught herself everything she needed to know.
