Christi Caldwell is an American author who writes historical romance. She hails from West Haven in Connecticut, a large city that felt like a small town because everyone knew everyone. Her family was far from wealthy.

Caldwell’s father worked two jobs to keep the family afloat. They couldn’t afford many of the material things other children enjoyed. Nonetheless, Caldwell’s childhood was joyous. She spent many hours on the beach playing with her friends and siblings.

The author met her husband in high school. They started dating at 15 and even attended the same university (the University of Connecticut), where she graduated with a Master of Arts in History Education.

She has traced her passion for storytelling to a romance novel she discovered in her aunt’s home as a child and loved. She found herself wishing she could blow audiences away by telling similar stories.

She took her first steps towards publishing success in sixth grade when she wrote a story about a shipwreck that thoroughly impressed her teacher. From that point onward, Caldwell referred to herself as a writer.

By the time she decided to give publishing a serious go (during her university days), the author had nurtured a love for history. As such, it was only natural for her to pursue historical romance.

She remembers spending twenty weeks on bedrest because of her pregnancy (with twin girls) and being overwhelmed with boredom and fear. Writing and self-publishing kept the author sane.

They also gave her a creative outlet. At the time, she never expected readers to take such a keen interest in her work. For Caldwell, writing is a labor of love. She crafts historical fiction novels because storytelling brings her joy and satisfaction, not because she hopes to earn a living.

That said, she’s grateful for the readers who allow her to earn a decent living from her craft. She also welcomes their emails, many of which praise her for incorporating messages that touched them into her books, messages she did not deliberately insert but which emerged naturally as her stories took shape.

History enthusiasts will notice the effort Caldwell injects into maintaining the authenticity of the eras in which she sets her books. The former teacher and history major tries to get the small details right.

She wants to stay true to the historical setting while giving her characters the freedom to explore the storytelling opportunities the period presents.

The easiest aspect of her process is the brainstorming stage. She has so many stories bouncing around her imagination that they keep her awake at night. On occasion, she will leave her bed mere moments after her head hits the pillow because an idea came to her, and she needs to put it on paper before it disappears.
