It didn’t help that his elementary school was a quiet and solemn place that went to great lengths to create a calm and controlled environment. Because of his ADHD, Pilkey was quite disruptive. On most days, he was just the class clown that threw paper airplanes and fired spitballs.

But on occasion, he would create such a ruckus that his teachers would send him out to stand in the hallway. The author’s rowdy behavior was so persistent that the school eventually added a desk to the hallway for him to occupy.

Pilkey wasn’t particularly pleased with the development. On the one hand, he had no interest in conventional classroom lessons. Because of his dyslexia, he hated standing before his classmates to read. The experience was humiliating.

His classmates were well aware of his limitations and they would often groan whenever he was called upon to read. And yet, sitting alone in the hallway was also very boring. Fortunately, Pilkey had a talent. He did not care for books but he liked to draw. He started producing comic books.

His stories were geared towards a young audience and his classmates loved them. Though, his teachers were quick to dismiss his work. One teacher went so far as to rip his comics apart. But Pilkey wasn’t deterred. It was during these years that he created Captain Underpants.

The author believes that some of his conflicts with his teachers were the result of his sense of humor which the adult educators did not appreciate. His experiences in high school were no better than those he had encountered in elementary school.

People kept dismissing his artistic abilities. But the author wouldn’t be discouraged. Drawing was the one thing he was good at and he was determined to stick with it. His passion paid off when he created a children’s book which won a competition.

Pilkey was 19 at the time. As part of his reward, the author’s book was published. The achievement encouraged the cartoonist to continue pursuing his career as an artist. He researched children’s literature in earnest, honing his craft in the process.

The books he wrote and illustrated in the years that followed were well received by critics but they were hardly financial successes. It wasn’t until he published the first book in the Captain Underpants series in the late 1990s that the wider public took notice of Pilkey’s work.

He went on to sell tens of millions of copies of his work, earning a strong following in dozens of countries. The author also became a powerful communicator. He visits schools where he encourages children to read.

Dav Pilkey Awards

Pilkey has won various accolades including the Caldecott Honor Award, Disney Adventure Kids Choice Award, California Young Readers Medal, and the Milner Award, to mention but a few.

Best Dav Pilkey Books

Pilkey goes out of his way to write books that are easy to read. He wants to appeal to children like him who struggle with the written word. Some of his best work includes:

Adventures of Captain Underpants: Harold and George are two boys that love writing comics. They also love pulling pranks. When Mr. Krupp, their mean principal, discovers plans for their next stunt, all hope seems lost. But then the boys acquire a ring that can hypnotize people. They use it on the principal, turning him into their own superhero.

Attack of the Talking Toilets: George and Harold created Captain Underpants. They loved the superhero but he wasn’t real. After Mr. Krupp, the principal, threatened to ruin their plans, they turned him into Captain Underpants. While that particular ploy was a success, George and Harold don’t expect things to turn out the same way.

They have just brought the Turbo Toilet to life. It was an accident. Unlike Captain Underpants, the Turbo Toilet is a terrifying monster.
