David Weber is an American author that writes science fiction and fantasy. Weber is best known for the Honor Harrington series. Born in 1952 in Cleveland, Weber started writing during his preteens. Initially, he experimented with poetry and short stories. But everything he wrote was quite terrible.

In 10th grade, the author joined forces with a friend to write a novel, but it was atrocious. But Weber loved writing, and he had no intention of stopping. In fact, he spent his teenage years writing advertising copy and news releases (His parents owned a PR firm.).

He continued along that trajectory for the next several years, plying his trade in radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, government studies, and wherever he could get work. Weber appreciated the experience because those jobs showed him how to work on a deadline.

He gained self-discipline that sustained him later on when fiction and publishing entered the picture. Initially, the author’s objective was to teach college history while writing stories in his spare time.

But then he finished his master’s and realized that finding a tenured teaching position was easier said than done. Fortunately, he had enough experience in public relations to work for himself.

The flexibility of self-employment gave the author the freedom to write. He used that freedom to experiment with fantasy. Weber was dabbling in war game design at the time. He would create short stories for the game-related products he was working on.

These stories were for his consumption. But one day, he sent one of them to Steve White. Steve responded with his own story. Weber reciprocated with another story. This continued until the pair realized that their short stories were chapters in a larger volume.

They submitted their work to Baen Books, and Jim Baen and Toni Weisskopf couldn’t help but recognize their talents. They offered the pair a significant sum to keep writing. This was the first step in a long and rewarding publishing journey.

Weber cannot believe that people pay him real money to do something he would do even if he weren’t being paid. He enjoys earning a living from storytelling. The author has also spoken fondly of the opportunities his career has given him to meet publishing figures he admires, including Anne McCaffrey, Robert Zelazny, and Carolyn Cherryh.

The readers that reach out to Weber are even more important because they say so many nice things about his work. Even when they criticize him, he appreciates the fact that they love his stories enough to buy his books before complaining about them.

The author thinks writers are lucky because they don’t have to grow up. They can spend their lives with their heads in the clouds, living in fictional settings, and going on incredible adventures. It is a privilege the author doesn’t take for granted.

Interestingly enough, even though he loves fantasy and science fiction, Weber’s reading habits are not restricted to those genres. He reads other genres all the time, immersing himself in the works of writers like Alastair McLean and Louis L’Amour.
