When she was a child, Denise read a lot. She loved the romance genre because of the way it would tug at her heartstrings. While other children played and passed notes in study hall, Denise would lose herself in a novel.
In her early 20s, she was tempted to write stories that mirrored the novels she loved. But life kept getting in her way. At first, she had to focus on her studies in college. Then she fell pregnant and added two children to her family.
The author had plenty of good reasons to put her writing dreams off. But when her grandfather died, he forced her to rethink her priorities. Denise’s grandfather was a man of faith that, in the author’s eyes, had served Jesus diligently during his life.
His life had mattered. The author remembers driving home and thinking that she hadn’t accomplished anything in her life. She started seeing her publishing dream as a tool for glorifying God.
Denise was hesitant to embrace the dream because she knew that publishing was difficult, and she wasn’t even confident that she had any talent for writing fiction. But she was ready and willing to give it a serious shot.
Once she started writing seriously, it took Denise three years to publish her book. The process was slow and painstaking, but the author believes that God used the delays to teach her patience.
Denise often speaks about the anti-Jesus culture in the world. She has noticed that people have either dismissed God as a myth or embraced multiple Gods. She wants to use her books to spread her faith, providing insight into the mind of the average Christian and revealing the power of hope and faith to struggling readers.
As a child, Denise never imagined that she would grow up to write Christian fiction. At the time, she was obsessed with secular romance. That obsession grew as she matured.
Even when she felt like God was convicting her over her desire to read secular romance, she fought him on the issue because she was determined to feed her hunger for contemporary love stories.
Her attempts to read Christian novels ended poorly because most of them did not tell the kinds of stories she wanted. By the time she abandoned secular romance, Christian books had become more diverse. She started finding novels that could scratch her itch. She also decided to do her part to strengthen the genre by writing Christian stories that would appeal to readers like her.
