Gilbert Morris was an American author who wrote historical, inspirational, and children’s fiction. Born in 1929 in Forrest City, Arkansas, he wrote over two hundred novels for young readers in numerous genres, including science fiction and fantasy.

The author attended Arkansas State College, eventually walking away with an English BA and an MSE. Besides enrolling at the University of Washington-Seattle, he also secured a PhD from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

In between his educational pursuits, the ordained minister led several Arkansas Baptist churches. Some readers may have encountered him at a public school in Reyno, where he taught English for a few years.

He also lent his wisdom to students at Ouachita Baptist College and Jimmy Swaggart Bible College. Morris made a name for himself in the religious community by writing Christian books with historical settings.

‘House of Winslow’ is among the most popular. The series explored the lives of several generations of the same immigrant family. The ‘Gilbert Morris’ name has appeared on books he co-wrote with his son (Alan) and daughter (Lynn).

The author’s beliefs shaped his writing career. Morris’s books were a vehicle through which he shared his Christian faith. His approach to writing was somewhat unconventional because he would dictate outlines, character lists, and stories on cassette tapes.

A lady would take the tapes, type them, and send Morris a hard copy. The author would revise the manuscript with the help of his daughter Lynn. The author obsessed over historical settings like Mississippi in the 1850s because of the dramatic events that routinely unfolded, such as The Civil War and the advent of modern transportation.

Some aspects of his stories emerged from his personal experiences. For instance, he chose a steamer as a fitting setting for ‘The River Rose’ because he lived in Helena, Arkansas, for a short time as a boy, and he remembered sitting on the river bank and watching sternwheelers.

Even though he wrote more than two hundred books, writing was not Gilbert Morris’ only hobby. He had a passion for building and restoring houses. He learned everything he knew about the activity from a book.

He wanted to spend the rest of his life restoring an ancient house from the 1800s and filling it with antiques or replicas. That life came to an end in 2016. Morris was 86 when he died.
