Grace Burrowes is a lawyer and bestselling author that writes historical romance novels. Burrowes started pursuing publishing as a career because her friends kept asking her when she was going to publish all the stories she had written. Burrowes was an adult by then.

She was eight when she first attempted to write fiction. Her parents got her a typewriter for Christmas. She used it to write a story about cats. During her time in the Eastern Mennonite University Master’s program, Burrowes was trying to decide what she wanted to do for her thesis.

Her advisor asked her what she would tackle if she could choose any project, without restrictions. Burrowes admitted that she would have loved to pen a novel examining the legal process in the United States.

Her advisor encouraged her to pursue the project. The final product was somewhat messy, filled with several pages of digressing and ranting. But it was enough to earn the author her degree.

While it gave her a taste of the writing process, it did not necessarily encourage Burrowes to write fiction. The author was quite busy at the time. She started her young adult life as a technical writer and editor.

Even though her work kept her occupied, she always found the time to read romance novels. She eventually got her law degree and opened a law practice. Her Master’s degree in conflict transformation entered the picture later on.

Along the way, Burrowes became a mother, a development that encouraged the author to move to a small town that was more conducive for her child’s upbringing. In fact, her daughter was a teenager when she got her Conflict Transformation degree.

Her decision to write her first novel was driven more by disappointment than desire. Burrowes was in her late forties at the time. She was working late, trying to finish a legal motion. But she was also exhausted.

Fortunately, she had a romance novel that she had been saving for a low moment. She took a break to read just one chapter, hoping that it would give her the kick she needed to finish her work.

Unfortunately, the romance novel was a shocking disappointment. More importantly, the experience left Burrowes with the thought that she could do so much better. So she discarded the novel in question and opened a new document on her PC. She started writing her manuscript.

The author landed her agent after joining the RWA. She attended a chapter conference but it wasn’t quite what she expected. First of all, it was a small gathering. Secondly, most of the people knew each other. Burrowes felt out of place.

Third, the author could barely make sense of the conversations. The other members had a more intimate understanding of the publishing arena. They also had a lot of passion. Burrowes left the conference feeling like she was severely underprepared for the journey.

However, by simply persevering, and without using any of the advice she received at the RWA conference, the author secured an agent and began her journey as a bestselling author.
