Helen Hardt is a bestselling author that writes novels in a variety of romance sub-genres. Hardt blames her career on her parents. Her father was an aspiring author and he encouraged her to write. Her mother would read to her regularly before she slept.

The habit contributed to the author’s interest in novels. She was just six years old when she wrote her first story. Though, it took her a long time to finally secure her publishing contract. She took a few detours along the way.

Hardt wasn’t counted among the popular kids in high school. She had one too many nerdy interests, having played the clarinet and alto horn whilst also contributing her skills to the school newspaper as a layout and design manager.

The author eventually attended St. Olaf College and the University of Denver from where she acquired her BA and Law Degree respectively. Hardt started writing novels seriously in 2006. She attempted to complete a YA fantasy novel.

However, along the way, she came across a Nora Roberts title that re-ignited an interest in the romance genre that she had nurtured when she was young. She hadn’t touched a romance novel in a decade.

The Nora Roberts novel reminded her of all the reasons why she appreciated romance. So she decided to make a serious attempt at writing a romance novel. Hardt finally got her publishing contract in 2008.

The development showed her that she could make a career out of writing, which is what she proceeded to do. Besides contemporary romance, Hardt went on to write novels in the paranormal and historical sub-genres.

She found that she enjoyed jumping back and forth between sub-genres because the practice enabled the author to stretch her creative boundaries. Though, most of her time is spent in the field of contemporary romance because the sub-genre has a large following among her readers.

Even though she doesn’t hesitate to switch sub-genres, it has never occurred to Hardt to abandon romance as a whole. She loves the genre because romance novels guarantee happy endings. As far as Hardt is concerned, there is no better escape for the weary mind than romance.

The writer loves all the romance tropes, including the strong, tortured alpha males and the intelligent, spunky heroines. She can’t get enough of fated mates, not only within paranormal romance but also in the contemporary romance sub-genre.

Hardt’s bibliography is saturated with series. While she isn’t averse to writing standalone novels, the author prefers to write series because they allow her to grow intimately familiar with her characters. She also has the opportunity to explore ancillary characters that would normally go unnoticed in a standalone novel.

She has gone so far as to give some of her supporting characters their own novels because they have such a strong fanbase. The author always listens to her characters. She is a pantser. Hardt has experimented with plotting but her characters always derail her.

She finds that it is easier to let them do as they please. On occasion, she will produce a rough outline. But for the most part, her novels start with a rough premise. She writes chronologically.
