Her time at City University was financed by The Independent newspaper. She studied newspaper journalism in 1992, eventually landing a position at The Independent. Before joining the publication, the author worked for the Egham and Staines News.

Jojo started writing at a young age. She filled her attic at home with stories of young girls riding telepathic animals. Her time as a journalist prepared her for the challenges she would encounter as an author of fiction. She learned to meet tight deadlines and to identify the most important aspects of every story.

However, it took Jojo a long time to finally attain her publishing dreams. Her first three manuscripts were failures. Publishers rejected them. Even though she was much younger at the time, Jojo had one child in her home and a second one on the way.

Her career as a journalist was also quite demanding. As such, she couldn’t afford to pour her time into an endeavor that had failed to produce fruit. For that reason, following the rejection of her first three manuscripts, she decided to give writing one more go. She wrote a fourth manuscript and she promised that she would abandon writing altogether if it was also rejected.

To her surprise, not only did the manuscript receive a positive reception but it triggered a bidding war among various publishers. This should have marked the start of a successful career in publishing. However, Jojo Moyes’ work did not attract the attention she had hoped it would.

After writing for The Independent for ten years, she began a decade-long relationship with Hodder and Stoughton in 2002. But none of her novels ever appeared on a bestseller list, not in those ten years.

‘Me Before You’ changed everything. Jojo was driving her children from school when she heard a story about a rugby player on the radio that inspired the story behind the novel. It was an unconventional love story but Jojo was confident in its potential.

She pitched it to Hodder and Stoughton but because of her track record, they did not share her enthusiasm. Because of all the risks involved, Jojo was hesitant to write without a contract. This compelled her to seek out other publishers, eventually landing a Penguin contract.

Unlike her previous publisher, Penguin loved the concept for ‘Me Before You’. Their faith in the author was rewarded. The book was a massive hit, attracting the praise of audiences in several countries.

Jojo’s other novels were just as well-received, turning the author into a giant literary star. ‘Me Before You’ isn’t the only story that was inspired by the news. Though, the author wants her readers to understand that she doesn’t have any particular source of inspiration. Her ideas come from ordinary life. She has been inspired by everything from paintings to music.
