Eventually, Dalzelle enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he secured a Masters in Aeronautical Science. But even though his engineering efforts kept the author busy, they couldn’t extinguish his obsession with writing.

The gift came naturally to him. Like many of his peers, Dalzelle felt a compulsion to tell stories. His mother is partly to blame because she frequently read to the author during his infant years. Although it took him a while to adopt the title of ‘Writer.’

Even after participating in and winning writing competitions at school, Dalzelle was reluctant to embrace publishing as a serious career choice. Everything changed when he began taking active steps to pursue his publishing dreams.

Dalzelle started describing himself as a writer who also did other things as opposed to an engineer who wrote for fun. The activity became his primary focus. He still remembers the day he decided to write ‘Omega Rising.’ At the time, he had no intention of turning the book into the first volume in a long-running series.

In fact, the author was trying to complete a separate project – a sci-fi book. But the manuscript fought him at every turn. After doing copious amounts of research for over a year, Dalzelle was at the end of his rope.

He remembers sitting at his laptop one random night, staring at a blank screen, and feeling nothing but disgust. So he closed the laptop and watched several episodes of ‘Knight Rider’ and ‘The A-Team.’

The shows sparked an idea. Dalzelle decided to write a short, fun, straightforward novel set in space. He described the book as ‘Empty Calories.’ Audiences would read, love, and forget about it soon after.

More importantly, the author wanted ‘Omega Rising’ to break the writer’s block, preventing him from penning his sci-fi book. But then he finished the novel and developed an attachment to the characters.

So, he altered the ending and left an opening for more stories. It was the best decision he ever made.

People gravitate towards books like ‘Omega Rising’ because Dalzelle doesn’t take his stories too seriously. Because he writes genre fiction, the author steers clear of flowery prose. The author wants readers to have the best possible time.

Dalzelle doesn’t base his books on his experiences or the real-life experiences of other people. Additionally, the author doesn’t deliberately infuse his books with social and political messages. Although, that hasn’t stopped some readers from finding hefty themes and meanings in his work.

Joshua Dalzelle Awards

Dalzelle received a nomination for a Dragon Award in 2019.

Best Joshua Dalzelle Books

The author was heavily influenced by ‘The Corps’ books from W.E.B Griffen. They fed his fascination with WWII. Dalzelle’s best novels include:

Warship: Mankind had grown complacent. They had conquered space and colonized hundreds of planets after discovering faster-than-light travel. With limitless resources at their disposal, armed conflict had fallen out of favor.

The machines with which they once waged war had become obsolete. Mankind had every reason to relish its successes. But did that overabundance make them weak? What would they do if a terrifying threat appeared on the horizon? Would they rediscover their evolutionary roots or fold in the face of overwhelming force?

Call To Arms: Captain Jackson Wolfe survived the impossible. But he couldn’t rest on his laurels. After the destruction of three Terran systems, he was convinced that a full-scale invasion was on the way. But no one believed him.

As far as the Confederate leadership was concerned, they had neutralized the threat. Society’s most powerful factions were too busy making backroom deals to listen to Wolfe’s warnings. But he had no intention of giving up.

After everything he had survived, Wolfe was determined to protect his species from the next incursion. They wanted proof before they could act. They needed irrefutable evidence that an invasion was on the way despite the many years of peace and quiet on the Frontier. Wolfe was going to find it.
