Later on, she joined Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor as a singing waitress. She also landed roles in many community theater productions and television commercials. The highlight of her college life was probably joining the Delta Sigma Pi Chapter at Loyola University, becoming the all-male fraternity’s first female member.

Interestingly, Hyzy’s husband Curt was one of her fraternity brothers. While the author hates talking about herself and her achievements, she doesn’t mind boasting about her wonderful husband and three amazing daughters.

Like many of her peers, Hyzy started her publishing career by trying and failing to complete a full-length novel. No one has ever read it, and she has no intention of submitting it for publication. The manuscript justified the author’s worst fears.

Hyzy was convinced that she did not have the discipline to finish a full-length novel. So, she stepped back and experimented with short stories. They satisfied her creative itch, at least for a time. In fact, her first published work was a short story that appeared in a Star Trek Anthology.

Eventually, a friend told her to give novels a shot. Hyzy thought it was a waste of her time. After all, what hope did she have of completing a full-length novel? Nonetheless, she gave it a go. This time around, she finished the book and loved the experience so much that she wrote another and another and another.

Many writers get their big break by first securing an agent. Hyzy is one of the rare exceptions. She sold her first manuscript without an agent. The same thing happened with the next two books.

Hyzy couldn’t believe her luck, especially when she saw her novels in hardcover for the first time, and the reviews began trickling in. The books were hardly a runaway success. That said, they got her noticed by the right people. She finally got the agent she wanted when ‘State of the Onion’ came out.

Surprisingly, her friends and family thought her dedication to writing was a mistake, at least initially. They told her to identify a career she could fall back on. She went into marketing because it had a creative aspect.

Strangely, not only did she excel in algebra, quantitative analysis, statistics, and geometry, but she also enjoyed the classes. On the other hand, she couldn’t stand accounting. She was equally bored by Econ.

The author held many positions in finance, working in banks, wealth management companies, and architectural firms before realizing that fiction was her true passion.

She tells aspiring writers to read and write every day. She also encourages them to move on to the next project after submitting their first manuscript.

Best Julie Hyzy Books

The author speaks at conferences where she delves into the nitty-gritty of the writing process. Hyzy’s best books include:

State of the Onion: Olivia Paras is not like most chefs. She is the Assistant Chef in the White House. She works in the world’s most important kitchen. For a time, Olivia’s only challenge was landing her dream job. She was determined to become Executive Chef before her nemesis could sneak past and steal the position.

But then she stumbled into a nefarious plot. Olivia went to run an errand. On her way back to work, she stumbled across a would-be intruder pursued by Secret Service agents across the White House lawn.

Olivia’s part in the saga should have ended when she stopped him with a few well-placed hits with a frying pan. But then she witnessed a murder. Now, an assassin has Olivia in his crosshairs.

Grace Under Pressure: Grace left Emberstowne for Chicago with her parents at a very young age. Later, she finished college and found a job in New York. She only returned to Emberstowne to care for her dying mother.

Because it was important to her family, she took a job at Marshfield Manor as an assistant curator. Her grandmother held the position years ago before Grace was born.

The last thing the assistant curator expected was for a horrible murder to earn her a promotion. Now, she must unravel the Manor’s secrets to solve the murder.
