Lucy Score is an Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestseller. She was born in 1980 on the coldest night of the year. Lucy read her first romance novel at 13 after stealing the book from her mother’s bookshelf.

It sparked her interest in the genre. Unfortunately, she had to endure years of high school before she could pursue her publishing dreams. Math wasn’t her only problem. The author was painfully shy, which made navigating the halls of high school a nightmare.

She decided to follow in the footsteps of Lois Lane by pursuing journalism in college. However, the field was too restrictive because it expected her to stick to the facts. So, she changed tracks and became a proofreader.

In the subsequent years, Lucy tried her hand at other equally uninspiring jobs. None of them scratched her itch. Fortunately, she always had a romance novel on hand. The genre gave her a much-needed escape.

On occasion, her imagination would concoct ideas for stories. But besides jotting them down for her own consumption, Lucy made no effort to write seriously until 2012. She read ‘50 Shades of Grey’ and felt a strong compulsion to give publishing a serious go.

When she was fired by her local newspaper, along with a third of the staff, she spent her free time penning a novella, which was more challenging than she initially assumed. It took the author a year to complete the 35,000-word manuscript.

At the time, she was making ends meet by freelancing as a journalist. But any hope she had of attaining overnight success went out the window when the book came out and sold an astounding 35 copies.

Convinced that her publishing dreams were not meant to be, Lucy tried to move on with her life. But the universe had other plans. She received an email from two indie writers. They had discovered her novella and concluded that it wasn’t that bad. They wanted to republish it under their company, but only if Lucy expanded the manuscript into a novel.

The author was ecstatic. She spent her nights and weekends polishing the novella. ‘Undercover Love’ finally came out in 2015. While it wasn’t a blockbuster hit, the book sold enough copies to motivate Lucy.

She even made a five-year plan that involved saving 12 months’ worth of her salary and building an extensive reader following. It took her mere months to finish ‘Pretend You’re Mine,’ her second novel.

But then her bosses upended her five-year plan by telling her she had up to the end of the year to find another job. Her time with their company was over. Her husband was unconcerned. He announced confidently that losing her job was the best thing to ever happen to her.

His prediction came to fruition when her second novel launched on Amazon the next morning and rocketed to the top spot in the Amazon Kindle Store.
