The author was constantly switching boarding schools. This continued for over a decade. The only blood relation with a consistent presence in Wodehouse’s life was his brother.

But the author’s unstable upbringing was not without its benefits. He spent several holidays with various aunts. The experiences inspired the aunts in the Bertie Wooster books.

After a stint at Dulwich College, any plans the author had for transitioning to university were shattered by his family’s financial woes. This paved the way for his time at London’s Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (HSBC).

Although, Wodehouse had no interest in banking. In fact, he took every opportunity he got to write. The author nurtured the activity during his childhood, using the hobby to fill the void in his life.

He continued to write during his banking days until he garnered enough success to turn the activity into a full-time career, pivoting out of banking into journalism and landing a position at The Globe.

After plying his trade at The New Yorker, the author dabbled in musical comedies, collaborating with the likes of Jerome Kern and Guy Bolton.

This was the beginning of a long and successful career, during which the author wrote many short stories and novels. Because people know him as an English author, they might be surprised to learn about the many years he spent in France.

Initially, Wodehouse went back and forth between England and the US. But when the threat of double taxation from British and American authorities arose, he fled to France in the early 1930s.

When the Second World War broke out, the author was so disinterested in international politics that he downplayed the severity of the conflict, refusing to return to England.

By the time he realized his mistake, the Germans had imprisoned Wodehouse. Initially, they took him to Belgium. Then, they sent the author to Tost, where he entertained the other prisoners.

After his release, the author made the mistake of basing various radio broadcasts on these interactions. His actions came back to bite him because England was still at war, and his countrymen accused Wodehouse of collaborating with the Nazis.

Libraries started banning his books. After attracting criticism from authors like A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh), it looked like Wodehouse’s career was over. But MI5 conducted an investigation into the author’s broadcasts and concluded that he was merely naïve, not a traitor.

Despite behind exonerated, Wodehouse decided to abandon England for New York. He spent the rest of his life in the US. He died in 1975.

P.G. Wodehouse Books Into Movies

Best P.G. Wodehouse Books

The author had a short career as a Hollywood screenwriter. He loved those days because Hollywood overpaid him for his services. Wodehouse’s best books include:

Right Ho, Jeeves: Bertie spent the last two months on vacation. But now he’s back in London. However, before he can find his footing, Bertie learns that his intimidating aunt wants him to visit her country house.

Bertie is intrigued. But before he can act, he also learns from Jeeves that an old university friend wants to see him. This is even more intriguing because, the last time Bertie checked, Gussie was at his country estate studying newts.

More importantly, Gussie hated London. Why was he in the city now, and what could he possibly want from Bertie?

The Code of the Woosters: Bertie is in a pickle. Madeline and Gussie have a romantic relationship of sorts. Madeline is the daughter of Sir Watkyn Basset, a judge. Watkyn’s opinion of Bertie is somewhat spotty because the judge fined him for stealing a policeman’s helmet.

However, that hasn’t stopped Madeline from taking an interest in Bertie. She’s convinced that Bertie harbors feelings for her. Madeline doesn’t mind because she wants to marry Bertie once her engagement to Gussie falls apart.

When Does The Next P.G. Wodehouse book come out?
