Priscilla comes from a relatively large family. Growing up, the author had six siblings all of whom were adopted, just like her, and all of whom were of mixed nationalities. Of the seven children, Priscilla and two of her brothers were British.

The blend of cultures made for quite the interesting upbringing. Priscilla was inspired to go into medicine by her father who once worked as an orthopedic surgeon. The author was a student at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

That was where she trained as a nurse. Though, she will more than likely remember the hospital for the fact that it introduced her to her husband. Working as a nurse greatly informed the author’s writing habits.

She primarily practiced nursing in Leek, and the thing she saw, the people she met, the languages people used, she memorized all of it and found a way to reproduce it in her books. Priscilla’s goal has always been to make her novels as authentic as possible, and that normally means making certain that every line of dialogue speaks heavily to the geographical origins of each character.

Priscilla Masters has admitted to basing many of her characters off people she knows. The people she likes become characters who aid her heroes in their investigations, while those individuals that rub her the wrong way she will insert as the victims of crimes.

Priscilla never gave up on nursing. Even after her writing career took off, she continued to pursue nursing part-time.

Priscilla is best known for Joanna Piercy and Martha Gunn, her most popular characters and the protagonists of her primary line of novels. Joanna is a DI in Staffordshire. She studied psychology and has since learned to use the knowledge she accrued to catch criminals.

Joanna works alongside a bodybuilding sergeant with whom she has developed a strong working relationship, though the pair clashes frequently.

Martha Gunn is a coroner in Shrewsbury. A widow with two kids to care for, Martha knows how to piece the clues of a dead body together to track down killers.

Best Priscilla Masters Books

Priscilla Masters is hardly a rock star in the publishing arena; however, she is dedicated to her writing craft and to the crime fiction genre and she has continued to churn out suspense-filled novels, with some of the best books in her bibliography including:

Smoke Alarm: Christie Barton, her daughter, and her father-in-law are dead, and all evidence points to the fact that they died horribly. Detective Inspector Alex Randall is called upon to investigate an intense blaze in Melverley and it doesn’t take him long to realize that the fire was deliberately started.

That would mean that someone intended to kill Christie and her family. Alex sees fit to call upon coroner Martha Gunn when a second house is burned down. However, this time the occupant is missing rather than dead. Gunn knows that finding the link between the two fires and locating the missing woman will shed light on both crimes.

Smoke Alarm is the fourth book in the Martha Gunn series. The novel picks up with Martha Gunn being called upon to provide some insight into a fire that claimed the lives of three members of a family.

While Martha tries to put the pieces of this fire together, she must also deal with the fact that her twins are ready to finally leave the nest and carve out lives of their own. With her husband dead, the notion of being alone worries Martha.

A Plea of Insanity: Heidi Faro was a psychiatrist at Greatbatch Secure Psychiatrist Unit. But then Stefan Guilio, an inmate, killed her. Now Claire Roget is trying to settle into her new position as Heidi’s replacement.

Claire wants to focus on her work. But she cannot help but consider the possibility that Stefan did not act alone, so she investigates. Her probing reveals that Heidi was keeping a close eye on another patient, a highly manipulative individual called Jerome Barclay.

Claire realizes too late that she might have bitten off more than she can chew. Her friends are facing a terrible threat and Claire doesn’t know if she can do anything about, not unless she is ready to put her career on the line by breaching medical confidentiality.
