R.L. Stine has been referred to as the Stephen King for children’s books, and that claim isn’t an exaggeration. Welcome to Camp Nightmare: This is the first Goosebumps book a lot of people remember reading.

Billy’s mom and dad decide to send him off to camp Nightmoon. And right away, Billy can tell that something is wrong. The bus driver stops in the middle of nowhere, throws everyone’s luggage out and drives off, seemingly abandoning the children to certain death at the hands of fearsome creatures until the leader of the camp, Uncle Al, shows up.

Bill makes new friends, learns the rules of the camp and begins to worry about his survival when campers begin to disappear. Everyone who read Goosebumps as a child remembers this book. It is the R.L. Stine book that cemented Goosebumps in the hearts of many kids and has followed them into adulthood.

Monster Blood: Because Evan’s parents are going house-hunting in Georgia, they decide to drop him off at his 80-year old Aunt Kathryn’s place. When Evan buys a can of monster blood from the old store near Kathryn’s house, the novelty of it all wears off when the green, slimy stuff begins to grow into a threatening entity with a monstrous appetite.

This book tends to divide adults; however, children love monster blood, primarily because, at that age, the story has all those bone-chilling elements that have made R.L. Stine such a success in the literary arena. The book is almost silly and the ending is frustrating, yet the way it scares children says volumes about Stine’s abilities as an author.
