Journalism allowed the author to travel to distant corners of the globe, visiting places like Africa and the Caribbean. The trips grounded Mofina because they showed him that most people were the same.

Everywhere he went, the author encountered surprising acts of kindness and generosity. From the man in Kuwait who offered him a ride on his camel to the woman in Ethiopia that gave Mofina a spool of her material to give to his wife, the author’s experiences humbled him.

Interestingly enough, when it came to finding inspiration for his thrillers, Mofina looked inward. The suburbs of home had more to offer the author than the jungles of Africa because he had an intimate understanding of North America’s streets, expressways, and alleys.

Suburban life in North America provided the perfect setting for the many unhappy families he wanted to explore, not to mention the secrets he hoped to unravel.

Mofina would often study his own suburban existence and ponder the crimes that could emerge if ordinary people encountered extraordinary circumstances. Every time his wife went to her book club, the author is not afraid to admit that he would think of scenarios where she failed to return home, and he was forced to investigate.

Mofina tends to look for situations that can upend a family’s routine existence, forcing them into terrifying confrontations.

The author has compared each story he writes to a Russian doll. He starts by introducing a problem for the reader to ponder. But once they peel the layers back, they quickly identify a new problem. But that problem is also a façade hiding additional twists and turns that audiences must navigate to reach the truth.

Mofina’s interactions with convicted murderers have shaped his understanding of the criminal mind. Over the years, he has noticed that most of the condemned killers on death row are ordinary human beings.

They discuss the atrocities they committed as one would a baseball game. The demons haunting them are not always easy to spot. But you will find them if you start digging.

The fact that many of his protagonists are reporters won’t surprise his peers. After all, authors are encouraged to write what they know, and Mofina can rely on his experiences to recreate the mindsets and attitudes of fictional journalists.

Rick Mofina Awards

The author has received Arthur Ellis, Thriller, Shamus, and Barry Award nominations. He has also won Arthur Ellis and Barry Awards.

Best Rick Mofina Books

When he isn’t writing, you will find the author at various mystery conferences and panels. Mofina’s best books include:

Cold Fear: Paige’s parents wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of life, so they fled to Glacier National Park. The scenery was every bit as breathtaking as they expected. But any hope they had of relaxing went out the window when Paige went missing.

The girl was all alone in the great outdoors with nothing but her dog. Law enforcement agencies responded swiftly, launching a massive search. Before long, the nation was gripped by the drama unfolding in the wilderness.

But the FBI had their eyes on Paige’s parents. Something was amiss. There was more going on than the evidence suggested. Someone was hiding a terrible secret, and the FBI wouldn’t rest until they uncovered it.

If Angels Fall: Reed’s future was bright. The Pulitzer Prize nominee had nowhere to go but up. But then a two-year-old girl died, and everyone accused the wrong man. Reed cannot forget the part he played.

He doesn’t want to believe that he pushed an innocent person to commit suicide. But the reporter cannot shake his demons, and as a result, his life has crumbled.

Reed’s wife is gone, and his editor wants to eliminate him. Walt Sydowski understands Reed’s pain. The lonely widower may have the highest clearance rates among his peers, but he couldn’t solve the girl’s murder, a failure that continues to follow him.

Fortunately, neither man has given up. They won’t rest until they find the truth.
