The author was one of four children. Because of his father’s work, the family was constantly moving. Malfi finally found stability once they planted roots in Severna Park in Maryland. A former student at Severna Park High School, the author also attended Anne Arundel Community College and Towson University, graduating in 1999 with an English Degree.

Inspired by his favorite authors, Malfi was still a child when he wrote his first story. As an adult, he produced several short stories and novels that small presses published. Back then, the author used his full name (Ronald Damien Malfi).

But later on, he realized that eliminating the middle name would improve the marketability of his books. The author, who tries to write 15 pages a day, garnered quite a bit of attention when he released ‘Shamrock Alley’ in 2009.

It was the only book Malfi plotted. The author doesn’t plan his novels out beforehand. He doesn’t see the point. In fact, to Malfi, plotting makes the writing process unnecessarily tedious because it doesn’t allow him to immerse himself in the stories he wants to tell.

He prefers to drive each new novel. But when he plots and outlines his stories, the book drives him. Additionally, writing becomes a bore. From what the author has seen, he never writes the stories he plots. He made an exception for ‘Shamrock Alley’ because it was based on a true story.

During his secret service days, Malfi’s father was part of an investigation to infiltrate an Irish gang. The author used his father’s adventures as inspiration for ‘Shamrock Alley.’ The pair collaborated extensively on the project.

He would write several pages before sending them off to his father to scrutinize. Malfi’s father would fine-tune some of the dialogue to make it more authentic.

The book was such a success that it was eventually optioned for a possible television adaptation. It was not the last novel to attract critical acclaim for Malfi. Many people have commended him for writing art house horror.

They have also praised him for writing disturbing scenes. According to the author, he keeps looking for new ways to make ordinary things unsettling by skewing them slightly.

A significant portion of his fans does not realize that he also plays music. Besides composing tracks for films, the author is part of a rock band. He believes that his songs and stories emerge from the same place.

Though, music is special to Malfi because it gives him an outlet for any pressure he may feel at any given moment. It can also relieve writer’s block.

Ronald Malfi Awards

Malfi has received Independent Publisher Book, Beverly Hills Book, Benjamin Franklin, and Vincent Preis Horror Awards.

Best Ronald Malfi Books

The author admires Stephen King. He started writing after reading King’s ‘Eyes of the Dragon.’ Later on, he discovered Peter Straub and Ernest Hemingway. Malfi’s best books include:

Bone White: Paul Gallo was back in Dread’s Hand, Alaska. Following his twin brother’s disappearance in the town a year ago, Paul would have preferred to stay away. But a mass murderer had drawn attention to the town by leading the police to all the victims he had buried in Dread’s Hand.

Paul expected his trip to the town to give him closure. But he found something else. The locals were certain that something evil lived in the woods. The wooden crosses they had arranged in a line were supposed to prevent the devil from stealing their souls.

Paul would have gladly dismissed them as superstitious fools. But despite all the bodies they have exhumed thus far, Danny was still missing.

Come with Me: Aaron Decker’s wife was dead. He wanted to mourn in peace, but Allison wouldn’t let him rest. Aaron’s journey began with a receipt for a motel room he discovered in Allison’s belongings.

Driven by curiosity, he tried to retrace his wife’s steps in the weeks leading up to her death. He did not expect to stumble into a web of death and horror. Allison had secrets, some of which should have stayed hidden.
