Shannon Mayer is a Canadian author that writes urban fantasy. She had the fortune of growing up in a home filled with Star Wars fanatics. The experience left a mark on the author’s life, so much so that Shannon has made several nods to Star Wars in her books.

Shannon knew early on that she wanted to write fiction for a living. But her friends and family discouraged the author, telling her that writing was a hobby at best and that only big names like Stephen King could profit from the activity.

Shannon took their words to heart. She kept on writing. However, she couldn’t bring herself to take the activity seriously. But then the author and her husband decided to start a family, and everything changed.

The couple discussed the future and concluded that they couldn’t survive on one income. The pair lived on a farm, and they knew that Shannon’s pregnancy would prevent her from performing her duties.

It wouldn’t be appropriate for her to crawl under a horse to change a shoe when her belly was bulging with a baby. They started discussing ideas for potential income sources, and Shannon’s husband reminded her of her love for writing.

Shannon did not perceive publishing as a viable career. But her husband told her she wouldn’t lose anything by writing that first book. At worst, it would give the young family a small income.
