She also remembers Carnegie library with its brick walls, stone steps, and hardwood floors. The children’s section had a bench. At the time, she couldn’t imagine a more wonderful place.

While her grandmother played a significant role in igniting her interest in reading, no one pushed Sheila to write. She developed the habit on her own. The author cannot think of a time when she wasn’t writing.

She was delighted when she realized that she could earn a living by telling stories. Sheila does all her writing on a laptop, which is convenient because she can write from anywhere.

The author doesn’t follow a writing schedule. She does not set time aside for the explicit purpose of writing. However, she makes a point to write every day. The activity is not a chore because Sheila loves what she does.

She doesn’t have to force herself to sit down and write. Music rarely factors into the writing process because it distracts her. She can’t help but sing along. Whenever she plays music, Sheila sticks to the instrumental variety.

Before her obsession with fiction took root, the author wanted to write music. In fact, novels were her side hobby, an activity she did for fun while she pursued her songwriting career.

She only changed her tune because she successfully sold one of her novels. The achievement changed everything, pulling the author in a new direction. Even though Sheila continues to dabble in music, she doesn’t take it seriously.

Where her writing process is concerned, Sheila is a planner. She starts by creating a roadmap that details the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Sheila does not mind taking unplanned detours along the way.

However, she needs to know the major checkpoints of her story. Otherwise, she runs the risk of writing herself into a corner.

She writes two drafts before bringing her editor into the mix. Writer’s block doesn’t bother her. It was an issue in the beginning when she started landing big contracts.

She panicked because she wondered whether she could deliver on her promises. But practice and experience showed the author that her imagination was no different from a car. If she kept turning the key and hitting the gas, it would eventually start.

Sheila encourages aspiring authors to do their research. It isn’t enough to read books about the craft. They should attend conferences and study their favorite authors to get a better understanding of how they construct their stories.

She has also discouraged aspiring authors from rushing their first manuscript out. It takes time to master one’s craft, and an aspiring writer’s first manuscript is rarely their best work.

Best Sheila Roberts Books

The author’s novels explore women’s friendships. She takes inspiration from the many amazing female friends in her life. Sheila’s best books include:

Welcome to Moonlight Harbor: When Aunt Edie asked Jenna Jones to run The Driftwood Inn, Jenna accepted the request without hesitation. At 40, Jenna was divorced, and even though she had a teenage daughter to care for, her ex was more than happy to take spousal support from her. Even more annoying was the fact that he was spending the money on another woman.

Jenna needed all the help she could get. The Driftwood Inn should have been a blessing because it gave her a place to stay. But when she agreed to run the business, Jenna was unaware of the Inn’s dilapidated state.

The Snow Globe: A German toymaker’s Christmas took a nasty turn when he lost his wife and son. The widower was inconsolable. But then a Christmas gift came into his life: a snow globe that fixed his emotional wounds and gave him a purpose.

The snow globe jumped from owner to owner over the generations, always landing in the arms of the one person in desperate need of a Christmas miracle. Now, it’s Kylie Gray’s turn. Her prayer is simple. She needs someone to love.
