Stephanie Laurens is an Australian author that writes romance. She was born in 1953 in Sri Lanka. At the time, the country was a British colony called Ceylon. Laurens went to school in Melbourne.

She was five when the family migrated to Australia. After securing her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, the author and her husband relocated to London. However, it was the sort of journey they will remember for the rest of their lives.

They started in Katmandu, making their way through northern India, Kashmir, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. But their journey was hardly done. They left Kabul for Iran, pushing through Isfahan, the Caspian Sea, and Istanbul.

Even with all the years that have passed, Laurens cannot forget the trip. Places like Afghanistan and Turkey still live rent-free in the author’s brain. They eventually reached Europe. Although, they meandered a bit before finding their destination (London).

They made their home in a woodcutter’s cottage from the 16th century, not far from ruins and castles from previous centuries. The positions they had landed as research scientists kept them busy.

The pair did not limit their travels to London’s many attractions. They also toured Europe, visiting places like France, Spain, and Northern Italy. Ultimately, circumstances led the pair back home to Melbourne, where they continued their endeavors as science researchers.

Interestingly enough, when the author first discovered her passion for writing during her adult years, she was trying to escape the demands of her career. Laurens started reading romance novels in her early teens.

She spent her time in England accumulating a sizable collection of Regency romances she could never find in Australia. But then she returned to Australia and read all the books in her collection.

After trying and failing to find replacements in Australian bookstores, Laurens found an unexpected solution. She decided to write a regency romance novel.

The decision was sudden, but the author followed through, using her nights and weekends to pen the story. At the time, she was writing for herself. In fact, she only finished the book because she wanted to know how the story ended.

Mills and Boons published the novel and then bought seven more Regency romances from Laurens. It took a while for the author to realize that her time as a research scientist had come to an end.

On the one hand, she was tired of the stress. On the other hand, she had a strong desire to write fiction. So, Laurens did the only thing that made sense. She left her job to write full-time.
