The author has lived in dozens of places over the years. She doesn’t like staying still. Of all the places she has visited, her favorite is France. Her family moved to the country for the first time when she was nine.

While her brothers attended an American school at an airbase, Susan was sent off to an all-girls convent school. The experience was highly rewarding. It allowed the author to immerse herself in the local culture. She also learned the language.

Susan was so fluent in French that her mother, who couldn’t speak the language, would rely on her to translate whenever they went shopping in Paris. She thinks fondly of those days. They made her feel special. She also enjoyed roaming the city, a habit she continued as an adult.

Life in France wasn’t easy. The family did not have access to modern amenities. Susan’s school had to make do with outdoor stalls rather than bathrooms. Their parents would shovel coal into a furnace to keep the house warm. Her brothers were tasked with killing the rats in the basement by throwing stones at them.

She would often join them in the hills whenever they threw pebbles at wild boars to get the animals to chase them. Susan Kiernan-Lewis doesn’t doubt that an adult would have found France in the 1960s tedious. But for a child, it was wonderful.

As far as her career is concerned, she started as an advertising copywriter. Her work allowed her to live in places like New Zealand and Florida. She worked with various shops. She eventually started a small business that allowed her to indulge in her love for France.

It also gave her an excuse to make frequent visits to the country. Susan’s entry into the publishing field was encouraged by the advent of indie publishing. She realized that self-published allowed authors of all backgrounds to bring their stories to the public without facing the exhausting hurdles that make traditional publishing so problematic.

The years she had spent as an advertising copywriter served Susan well. She was an extremely fast writer who started churning out mystery novels at an incredible rate. Naturally, she did not hesitate to set some of her stories in France.

She also made a point to use expatriates as her protagonists. The author wanted to tell stories about fish-out-of-water individuals that had to adapt to life in a new location even as they solved head-scratching mysteries. Expatriate protagonists enabled her to do just that.

Best Susan Kiernan-Lewis Books

A wife and mother, Susan has experimented with a variety of genres, including science-fiction, fantasy, and cozy mystery. Some of her best novels include:

Murder in the South of France: Maggie Newberry doesn’t have much to complain about. She has lived a privileged, sheltered life, and she enjoys the work she does as an advertising copywriter. Though, she will be the first to tell you that, at 34, she doesn’t like the fact that she hasn’t found ‘the one’ yet.

Maggie’s life takes an interesting turn when her sister dies. The two hadn’t seen each other in a while. The fact that her sister is dead isn’t Maggie’s only concern. She has a little niece that no one knew about. To find her, Maggie must fly to the south of France. There, she will attempt to make sense of the life her sister lived.

Free Falling: David and Sarah wanted a break from their busy lives in Jacksonville. So they packed their bags and flew to a rustic cottage in an isolated corner of Ireland. The objective was to relax and to spend time with one another.

They did not expect a devastating national incident to ruin everything. Now they must survive in the face of looters and starvation. They must learn to depend on one another in a world without phones, the internet, or electricity.
