She wrote her first novel at the tender age of eight. But she abandoned writing and publishing for several years while pursuing her education. Though, she never stopped reading.

Her first novel finally reached bookshelves in 1987. By 1992, she had deserted teaching, having decided to dedicate her time and resources to writing full time. She spent the first stage of her career writing romance novels set in various locations and eras before turning her attention to Women’ Fiction in the 2000s.

A wife, mother, daughter, and friend, people gravitated to Wiggs’ stories because she wrote about ordinary people that overcame extraordinary situations.

She also explored relatable themes such as love, friendships, and family, selling millions of copies of her books in the process. Wiggs was an avid reader during her childhood. She remembers reading ‘Harriet the Spy’ and being immediately hooked.

The author related to Harriet’s habit of watching people and noting everything she saw and heard. Her mother was vital to her success because she nurtured Wiggs’ love for reading.

Additionally, the woman would transcribe the stories her young daughter dictated. As she matured, the many wonderful books Wiggs read compelled her to write her own stories.

The author cannot believe that she earns a living from her books. She plans every story she writes. However, she doesn’t always stick to her plans. Wiggs permits each story to flow in any direction it pleases. She wants the characters and their tales to surprise her, which occasionally happens.

Unlike many of her peers, the author writes the first draft by hand. Then she uses WordPerfect to type it. She prefers the application to Microsoft Word because it is smarter.

Between writing and revising, it can take Wiggs six to twelve months to finish a novel. Despite her extensive experience, the writing process never gets easier.

It has become more familiar over the years, which is why the author no longer panics when a story fails to coalesce into a cohesive whole. But it isn’t necessarily easier.

Wiggs is not immune to writer’s block. She overcomes the obstacle by stepping away and doing something active. That includes biking, hiking, gardening, drawing, etc.

She has friends, editors, and fellow writers she can consult when the need arises. Wiggs does more research than her fans realize. Her hard work goes unnoticed because she doesn’t use everything she learns.

The author uses the considerable volume of information she gathers to give her stories additional depth.

Susan Wiggs Awards

Wiggs has won Rita, RT Reviewers Choice, and Romance Readers Anonymous Awards.

Best Susan Wiggs Books

The author has many interests, including hiking, golfing, skiing, and photography. Wiggs’ best books include:

The Lost and Found Bookshop: Natalie wanted to sell her bookshop. The business belonged to her mother before Natalie inherited it. But her grandfather’s health was declining. His best hope was an assisted living facility.

Natalie knew that the derelict building in which the bookshop was housed had value. But Andrew, her grandfather, owned it. And rather than selling it, he wanted Natalie to renovate the property.

Natalie knew better, but she obliged, hiring Peach Gallagher to initiate the necessary repairs. The contractor brought his young daughter along. Natalie and Dorothy spent many an hour reading to one another.

Before Natalie could comprehend the transformation, she had begun an unexpected journey that would ultimately heal her sorrow, a journey filled with discoveries.

The Oysterville Sewing Circle: Caroline’s glamorous fashion career came to an end when a scandal ruined her life. She fled back to the Oysterville with two orphans in tow, children for whom she was expected to care.

But her home had changed significantly. Her siblings had matured into complicated adults. Her parents could no longer manage their successful seafood restaurant. The aging couple wanted the next generation to take the reins.

Will Jensen was back in town. Even though she wanted more from her childhood friend, Will had fallen for her best friend. That was back when Sierra was the town’s most beautiful girl.

Struggling with more baggage than she can carry, Caroline must reinvent herself in a place she no longer understands.
