When Reid left college, she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. She encourages young graduates to take the time to find their path before rushing into a particular career. She is convinced that, if they take a moment to consider their options, the universe will push them in the right direction.
When Reid left school, she went into film production, working as a casting assistant. The work had its benefits. She had the opportunity to shadow two casting directors who had a powerful impact on her life. Not only did Randi Hiller and Sarah Finn support the author but they went out of their way to tell everyone they knew about her, giving her the spotlight she needed to thrive.
None the less, Reid wasn’t necessarily happy. The work was far too stressful and she also found that she did not enjoy it. At the very least, she was certain that she did not want to spend the rest of her life working in casting.
So she left and secured a desk job at a studio. Though, she did not stay in that position for long. Reid joined the tech arena, lending her talents to an entertainment firm she had encountered back when she worked in casting.
But the job did not stick. The author couldn’t settle on a career. It wasn’t until she entered the education field, finding employment at a high school, that things changed. It was during this period that she wrote and sold her first book.
She had done some writing as a younger woman. Reid would turn the dramatic occurrences of her life into simple stories that she would send to her friends. The habit allowed the author to hone her skills but it wasn’t sustainable because Reid’s life wasn’t always interesting.
So she turned her attention to fiction. Reid wrote a novella that got her a literary agent. And then, once she got her high school job, the author put her mind to the task of writing a full-length novel, paving the way for her eventual success.
The author does most of her writing from home. Her family consumes the first few hours of her morning. But she tries to ensure that she is seated at her desk and ready to write by 9 AM. On a typical day, she tries to write until lunchtime.
Sometimes, she has a book to complete. But in some cases, she has marketing-related chores to tackle. She uses lunchtime to take a break before returning to her desk and working until 6 PM.
Reid is very disciplined. She tries to write a specific number of chapters a day. Most of her deadlines are self-imposed but that doesn’t stop her from obsessing over them. She only sits down to write when she knows how her story will start and end.
She uses the writing process to figure out the middle sections. In most instances, it takes her no more than eight weeks to complete her first draft. She makes several drafts before she is satisfied with her manuscript.
