Initially intent on pursuing Astrophysics, the author eventually took an interest in literature and never looked back. She quickly made a splash, winning praise from publications like The Guardian and Publishers Weekly for her riveting stories.

Even though Schwab is a prolific writer with a fairly extensive bibliography, her fans do not realize that many of her books require years of work. It can take up to a decade for the author to turn a vague idea into a tangible concept for a novel she can publish.

Some of her novels require more research than others. For instance, to write ‘The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue,’ she visited every location in her story, including places she eventually chose to eliminate from the story.

She wrote the novel over ten years, and it changed during that time, with the characters’ fears and motivations morphing in response to the author’s personal growth.

Worldbuilding is a vital aspect of the author’s stories. She tries to understand the settings her characters will inhabit, creating the systems that govern her fictional societies.

When it comes to fleshing out the culture, the author is not as obsessed with explaining every little detail as her peers. She finds minor aspects that matter, including the language and folklore.

Schwab believes that less is more. She wants the reader’s imagination to fill the gaps in her blueprint. She expects them to extrapolate the rules from the broad constructs she crafts.

The author places considerable emphasis on the social hierarchy. She is convinced that class systems add a sense of realism to fictional settings because they make it so much easier for people to understand the relationships between characters.

Schwab believes that many aspiring authors go wrong because they inundate readers with details about their world that ultimately don’t matter. Those details become a weight that distracts from the primary story.

Schwab is just as obsessive about her worldbuilding. She writes several pages about her settings, character designs, backgrounds, and magical systems. But most of that information stays in her notes. It never sees the light of day. Instead, it allows her to maintain consistency because she understands the worlds and characters better than anyone

Schwab encourages writers to find editors that understand their needs and who can provide constructive criticism.

Best Victoria V.E. Schwab Books

The author takes inspiration from literary veterans like Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman, that create quiet tension in their stories. Schwab’s best books include:

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: Adeline wanted more from life. It wasn’t enough for her to become a wife and mother. She thought the gods would answer when she prayed. But they remained silent, and Adeline had no choice but to make a bargain with the darkness.

The devil gave her everything she wanted. Adeline was immortal. But her gift came with a downside. None of the people she met would ever remember her. She was destined to stay in the shadows, living a life that was equal parts remarkable and unremarkable.

Initially, she took great pleasure in her affliction, traveling the world and playing her part in every major conflict. But then the loneliness took hold. After centuries, Addie realized that she still wanted more.

The last thing she expected was for Henry to change her life dramatically. The bookstore owner saw and remembered her. He offered Addie a chance at love. But Addie had to pay a dear price for her newfound opportunity.

A Darker Shade of Magic: Kell was special. Like the few Antari left in existence, he could travel between Red, White, and Grey London. The magician, who hailed from Red London, used his considerable skills to give people glimpses of a world beyond their imagination.

Grey London had nothing of significance to offer Kell, or so he thought. Delilah came out of nowhere, stealing his valuables and then saving his life. But she was hardly done. Delilah wanted Kell to take her on an adventure in a parallel world.
