A graduate of Oklahoma State University and Cornell University, Carter’s cemented her reputation in the writing arena via adult fiction titles like Cheating at Solitaire. However, it was with I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You, the first book in the Gallagher Girls series that Carter saw her popularity explode.

The book introduced readers to Cammie Morgan, a girl who attends a special academy designed to turn exceptional young women into world-class spies.

The Gallagher Academy was founded in 1865 by Gillian Gallagher who wanted to take young women of considerable competence and teach them the ways of espionage. Gillian chose to base the school in her family mansion which she was driven to renovate after the government denied her entry into the secret service.

To the ordinary outsider, Gallagher academy is just another prestigious school designed to cater to the needs of girls. For most locals, Gallagher is where all the privileged snobs collect to bask in all the luxuries money can buy.

But in truth, Gallagher Academy is purposed towards instilling in its students every tool they might need to survive in the world of espionage. That includes martial arts, political history and code breaking to mention but a few.

The school has three sub-levels. As students progress in their studies, they gain access to new levels which in turn burdens them with a wholly different collection of responsibilities. The biggest draw of the Gallagher Girls series is its bevy of kick-ass female protagonists.

Ally Carter emphasizes the action, adventure, and suspense. And that is to be expected. After all, the Gallagher Girls series is a collection of spy novels. However, the heart of the story is often the friendships Cammie forms with her classmates.

The cast grows with each new novel. Cammie is always making new allies even as she attracts enemies from different spheres of the espionage arena. The first few books in the series tell independent stories, though hints towards a larger plot are given.

It isn’t until book four that a specific story arc develops.

Gallagher Girls Awards

Best Gallagher Girls Books

The Gallagher Girls series elicits interest because it takes the tropes of high school literary drama and throws them into a spy thriller, with some of the best books in the series including:

Out of Sight, Out of Time: Cammie believes she was enjoying her summer vacation. She can’t be too sure, though. When she wakes up, she is in an alpine convent and several months have passed. An ancient terrorist organization called the Circle of Cavan had been hunting her for a year, so she assumes they must have had something to do with her amnesia.

Cammie doesn’t find much solace at the Gallagher Academy when she finally returns because there are more questions than answers waiting for her. With the Circle still on her trail, Cammie and her friends must travel to the other side of the world to piece together the clues she might have left behind before losing her memory.

United We Spy: Cammie Morgan lost her father and her memories. But she has some hope left because now she knows the truth. She understands why the Circle of Cavan has been hunting her. And she doesn’t have much time to track their members down and stop them before they make their move against her.
