She spent seven years putting the certification to good use by working as a mediator. But she eventually abandoned the field to write full-time. Unlike some of her peers, despite her educational accomplishments, Kaufman did not study writing when she was first starting out.

As a young student, she was more interested in Irish History. She took great joy in writing about amazing Irish women whose exploits have gone largely ignored by the public. She also wrote about human rights as part of her law degree.

It wasn’t until she became a successful published author that Amie Kaufman finally decided to pursue her Ph.D. in Creative Writing. As a solo author, Kaufman’s first series was ‘Elementals’ which she wrote for young readers. But ‘Elementals’ started publication in 2018.

By this point in time, she was already well-established in the industry. Kaufman kickstarted her publishing journey with ‘These Broken Stars’ which she co-wrote with Meagan Spooner. The novel became a bestseller. This was on top of receiving awards recognition.

The sequel was just as successful. She eventually switched gears and partnered with Jay Kristoff to write ‘Illuminae’. That was in 2015. Kaufman and Spooner collaborated once more on ‘Unearthed’ which began in 2018.

While her ‘Elementals’ series drew a lot of interest, a lot of readers know Amie Kaufman more for her collaborative efforts than for her solo work. The author did not necessarily set out to co-author novels with Kristoff and Spooner.

But she enjoyed the process of working with her co-writers because she found that she respected them as much as they respected her. This made their collaborative efforts less of a dictatorship where one voice dominates the other and more of a partnership where both voices combine to produce a magical product.

Kaufman’s interest in reading was sparked at a young age. She lived one block away from the local library. So she had plenty of opportunities to indulge her passion for books. Kaufman spent several summers re-enacting her favorite books with her sister.

As an adult, despite amassing quite a number of educational achievements, she couldn’t escape her passion for reading and writing. This is why she eventually abandoned her career as a mediator to become an author.

Best Amie Kaufman Books

Kaufman lives with her husband, daughter, and dog. She likes eating, traveling, sleeping, and playing video games. Some of the best books in her bibliography include:

Illuminae: Kady’s life took a quick and immediate turn for the worst after she ended things with Ezra. First, her planet fell victim to an invasion force and Kady had to fight her way to an evacuating craft with Ezra in tow.

Secondly, a deadly plague was set loose and the fleet’s AI became an immediate threat. Now Kady has to come to terms with the fact that Ezra is the only other person she can rely on to bring order to her chaotic life.

These Broken Stars: Lilac and Tarver thought they had awoken to a nightmare. Their ship, a luxury spaceliner called Icarus had crashed into the surface of a planet. The incident had killed everyone except for Lilac and Tarver. Tarver couldn’t stand Lilac.

He did not know the girl but he knew her type. Lilac’s father was the richest man in the universe and a war hero like Tarver who came from nothing had no interest in crossing her path. But then Lilac and Tarver were forced to lean on one another to survive, and in doing so, they realized that the Icarus incident might have been a blessing in disguise.

They no longer care about leaving their new home. Though, a discovery is about to test their resolve.
