Instead, she went to a Quaker school because her mother was a Quaker. The author attended the University of Manchester. After graduating, she moved to Michigan, where she lived with her father and stepmother. Once she had saved enough money, she traveled to Australia.

Carola met her future husband in Hawaii. She married him once they returned to the mainland, but their marriage did not last. Carola’s publishing journey had an interesting start. She wrote her husband’s world history class essays, scoring the engineer four As.

The achievement showed him that Carola had the skill to write a book, and he told her as much. She did not listen, not at the start. Because the family kept moving, the author was always taking and abandoning temp jobs. When they finally settled down, her husband told her to get a full-time job.

He hoped that Carola would eventually carve out a career for herself. The author was appalled by the suggestion. Rather than surrendering to her husband’s idea, the author did something radical.

She picked a notebook, sat down, and wrote her first Regency romance novel. She selected the genre because she was intimately familiar with Georgette Heyer’s books, so much so that she could predict the developments in the story before they happened. She had read enough Regency Romance novels to write her own.

Carola took comfort in the fact that so many of the books she read were terrible, and yet the authors who wrote them had secured publishing deals. She could do better.

Admittedly, she wasn’t entirely confident in her ability to write a full-length novel. She was even less confident in her ability to sell the book once it was finished. However, to her amazement, of the six editors that saw her completed manuscript, two of them made offers.

Carola took the offers as a sign that she should write more books. She proceeded to do just that. She has written romance novels set in various historical eras.

Switching between different periods is not easy because the culture and traditions transform drastically. The author has to research the place of women in each century to determine how their roles have changed. She has to walk a fine line between showing the prejudices of the ancient past and endorsing them.

Carola knows that she cannot delete the problematic attitudes of previous centuries from her stories. But she tries to invent situations that enable her protagonists to reject some of the classist and racist mindsets they encounter.

Best Carola Dunn Books

The author credits Jane Austen for sparking her interest in the Regency period. Carola’s best books include:

Death at Wentwater Court: Daisy Dalrymple was an anomaly. The woman was wealthy, yet she had chosen to work as a simple journalist in 1923 Britain. Daisy was right at home in Wentwater Court.

Sprawling estates did not intimidate her. But Lord Stephen Astwick had perished. The fledgling journalist’s interview had suddenly become a murder mystery.

Daisy was not ready to dismiss Lord Stephen’s fate as an accident. But if she wanted to find the culprit, she had to collaborate with Scotland Yard.

The Winter Garden Mystery: Daisy is a plucky reporter in 1923. She has a simple assignment. A magazine wants her to photograph and then provide a write-up of Occles Halls. But Daisy’s mission has taken an unexpected turn.

Her adventure began when she saw a dead rosebush. Daisy made the mistake of commenting on it. It was dug up, revealing a dead body. The remains belonged to a housemaid. Everyone thought she had eloped with a salesman, but someone had killed her. More disturbing was the fact that she was pregnant.

Daisy wanted to help. Everyone thought the young Welsh gardener had committed the murder but the journalist was far from convinced. So, she called Alec. Once again, they must join forces to bring a killer to justice.

Sparks are still flying between the pair. They obviously care for one another, even though they are hesitant to admit it.
