James had a rather blue collar upbringing in Chicago, Illinois. His father worked at Libby’s canning plant while his mother stayed home with his six siblings. He has joked that his life was similar to that of the Brady Bunch. His family ended up moving from Chicago and he graduated from high school in Ballwin, Missouri. He would go on to the University of Missouri-Columbia where he graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He moved to Sacramento, California where he opened his own veterinary practice in the mid-1980s.

The work as a veterinarian who owned his own practice was really hard. James would work 14-18 hour days and in the ten years of owning the practice, he only had three weeks of vacation total. During this time he would write in his free time or on his lunch hour with animals all around him. With the success of his writing, he has flipped the script and now works just part-time as a veterinarian while concentrating on his writing full-time.

James Rollins is the brains behind international thrillers that have so far been translated into more than forty world languages. The sigma series has unveiled some of the world’s unseen parts, historical secrets and scientific breakthroughs; all done with what can only be described as stunning insight and at breakneck speed. The Sigma series has ten thrillers namely The Doomsday Key, The Devil Economy, The Last Oracle, Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Eye of God and the 6th Extinction, The Doomsday Key,and The Judas Strain. He has also written six individual adventure thrillers.

There are also two the Jake Ransom series which are middle grade adventures: Jake Ransom and the Skull King’s Shadow as well as Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx. He also co-authored some work with Grant Blackwood in the Tucker Wayne series adventures: The Kill Switch and Wark Hawk. Another of his co-author is Rebecca Cantrell in the Sanguines series which is a best seller with books such as: City of Scream, The Blood Gospel, Blood Brothers, Innocent Blood and Blood Infernal.

The series is mainly about a Department of Defense program beneath the Smithsonian museums in Washington D.C. The program is a secret and “killer scientists” use covert research and ops to handle scientific threats. However that was back in2 010 and de Laurentiis passed away soon after. 1 thought on “James Rollins”

  1. I have read all the Sigma and Sanguine series books and I wish he would write more in both series.
I am about to start the other series he wrote and I am very excited to found additional titles I hadn’t seen before. I love his research and knowledge about the subjects and how he incorporates fiction with facts.
James Rollins is one of my favourite authors, right up there with Wilbur Smith and Robert Heinlein.
I have always loved reading and when I find an author that can captivate my imagination I try to read everything he/she ever wrote.
Thank God for great stories, it made this past year (Covid 19) a bit easier to bear.
