Jane Green is an American novelist that writes chick-lit. Born in 1968 in London, England, she went to South Hampstead High School and Aberystwyth University.

Green spent her early 20s with Granada TV before turning her attention to notable publications like The Daily Express and Cosmopolitan magazine. Besides working with the ABC News team and running her own BBC radio show, Green has used the skills she gained from the French Culinary Institute (New York) to write cookbooks. Though, fiction is her primary passion.

The author blames her decision to write novels on her introverted personality. She spends a lot of time in her head. As a result, she has a lot of thoughts. Rather than speaking those thoughts out loud, she prefers to write them down. The activity allows the author to make sense of the jumbled mess in her brain.

Green solved the problem by calling some publishers and querying them about the agents that had reached out to her. Once the publishers realized that so many agents had started vying for Green’s manuscript, they took an immediate interest in the author, sparking a bidding war.

The author couldn’t have asked for a better outcome, though this particular turn of events occurred after Green received a crushing blow. Initially, she sent her manuscript to an agent at Peters Fraser and Dunlop. The rejection she received in return was demoralizing because it called her manuscript ‘unpublishable.’

The letter destroyed the author’s morale. The depression overwhelmed her. Fortunately, she sent the manuscript out to 13 agents, and nine of them took an interest in her work.

Later on, Green discovered that her first rejection letter came from the secretary, not an agent. The numerous bestsellers that Green has accumulated over the years justified her faith in her abilities.

She knew she was going to succeed once publishers started bidding for her manuscript. The author has maintained that forward momentum in her career because she is highly disciplined.

Her past as a journalist is partly to blame. Her superiors would often demand sizable articles from her, and she had to deliver within hours. She applies that same determination to her novels.

Green treats each manuscript as a task that must be accomplished at all costs. She goes to great lengths to hold herself accountable. The author starts writing at 9 am. For some reason, she cannot write at home. She gets most of her writing done at a library, office, or coffee shop.
