Seanan McGuire is an American author that writes urban fantasy. Born in 1978 in Martinez, California, Seanan has an eclectic collection of interests that include long walks in the swamp.

Seanan was a creative child. She thinks she lost some of the magic over the years because of all the constraints adulthood placed on her. As a child, she would enact elaborate adventures with her friends.

The author would also fill her notebooks with descriptions of the fictional worlds in which the adventures took place, providing backstories for the characters, explaining the politics, and more.

By the time she was seven, the author had transitioned to essays, songs, and short stories. Because computers did not exist, Seanan did most of her writing on an electric typewriter. The device made too much noise, and the author made things worse by choosing to write at 3 in the morning.

At the tender age of 11, Seanan’s mother blew the author’s mind when the woman bought ‘The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.’ This was a twenty-year run. She found it at the flea market.

Seanan remembers sitting under her favorite tree and reading the volume’s numerous stories during the summer. She couldn’t wait to grow up and replicate the success of her favorite authors.

At the time, she had no idea that an incident at Golden Gate Park would inspire her to write ‘Rosemary and Rue.’ The author was having a lovely time with her friends when she reached the top of the Moon Bridge and found that she couldn’t move.

Her friends tried to coax her down, but their words couldn’t reach her. Seanan was ready to spend the rest of her days on the Moon Bridge. But then she looked down, noticed the koi in the water, and an interesting line came to her.

The line stuck with her, and she kept pondering it. Finally, Seanan had to get down. The desire to go home and write the story whirling in her imagination overcame the author’s fear.

Initially, she wrote the short story out of curiosity. And once it was done, she was more than happy to discard it before moving on with her life. But one of the friends that read the short story started nagging her.

She wanted Seanan to write a novel, and the author finally acquiesced, turning the short story into a book which, in turn, morphed into a full-fledged series.
