Writing came naturally to the author. He was only ten years old when he secured his first writing award. Higgs is not afraid to admit that he wasn’t the best student. In fact, the only subject that could even remotely hold his interest was creative writing.

His negligent approach to education meant that Higgs wasn’t good at anything when he left school. He had no other choice but to join the Army. Interestingly enough, life in the military suited the author.

Higgs made effective use of the 25 years he spent in the military, not only rising through the ranks but furthering his education. By the time he left, Higgs had a degree in technology (First Class) and a Master’s in Engineering, Management, and Business, which meant that at 42, he was far more employable than he had been when he first joined the Army.

However, even with all he had accomplished, the author’s interest in fiction had never waned. He couldn’t stop concocting new stories. However, writing and publishing did not sound like viable careers.

Higgs was content to write as a hobby until Tempest Michaels entered his life and changed everything. The author’s inspiration for Blue Moon Investigations came from the many supernatural shows on TV, not to mention the many people he encountered along the way that actually believed in the paranormal.

Tempest has a lot in common with Steve Higgs, and for a good reason. Before Tempest Michaels came along, the author had tried and failed to create a believable fictional character.

Tempest stood out because the author gave the hero some of his own traits. Higgs gave Tempest his dogs, career, and even his parents. This brought Tempest to life, making him more vivid than any other character Higgs had ever created.

The author did the same thing to some of his supporting characters, using real people to flesh out their attributes. The result was a series of page-turning mysteries.

Higgs’ days in the Army have done wonders for his publishing career because they taught him discipline. He wakes up at 5 AM every morning and writes till 7.

Then he goes to the gym for 30 minutes before cycling to work. Ten hours later, he cycles back home and spends whatever time he can with his family before dedicating the next few hours to his manuscript.

Because the author’s stories come from his head, he doesn’t have to perform research before he sits down to write. On occasion, he will Google a fact that affects the rationale of a scene, for instance, the number of days it takes a ship to travel between Hawaii and Japan. But the bulk of his stories emerges from his head.

Best Steve Higgs Books

The author’s favorite writers include Lee Child, Janet Evanovich, and Stephen King. Higgs’ best books include:

Pork Pie Pandemonium: A retired detective superintendent was looking forward to tasty treats when he began his culinary tour. The last thing he expected to find was a clue to a murder. His ex-police dog partner was growing impatient. Rex, who was fired for his attitude, knew the answer to the mystery.

It was clear as day to him. But the humans were so slow. Fortunately, he was more than happy to point them in the direction, especially his human partner, who had joined forces with a teenage girl.

What Sam Knew: Patricia has a mystery on her hands, one that involves a climber who fell to his death and an artist whose dog was stolen. At 50, Patricia isn’t anyone’s first choice for a detective. But there’s more to the feisty woman than meets the eye.

She knows her way around puzzles, and she won’t back down from a fight, not when she has a faithful Jamaican butler who’s part ninja. Though, this time around, Patricia might have bitten off more than she could chew. She did not expect the mystery to pit her against a mysterious underworld figure when she took the case.
