But for the most part, they never stayed anywhere long enough for Tessa to grow comfortable. On the one hand, the experience was interesting because it exposed the author to all kinds of people. She lived in both small towns with populations in the hundreds and massive cities that threatened to swallow her whole.

She met people from so many cultures. During this complicated period, Tessa grew to rely on her books and the libraries that housed them. They kept her engaged and entertained. They also taught her about life.

The stories she consumed kept the loneliness at bay. She read anywhere and everywhere: before dinner, after dinner, during and in between classes, at night, and even as she walked.

Her writing habit developed alongside her love for reading. Though, it wasn’t until her second child was born that she decided to pursue the activity as a career. If you ask Tessa to point to the one occurrence that placed her on the path to publishing success, she may highlight the Jane Austen stories she wrote as ‘Vangie’.

The fan fiction did not necessarily turn her into a household name. But it introduced her work to the public. A more tangible achievement is the Avon FanLit Contest which her short story won. It appeared in a HarperCollins volume (These Wicked Games), proving that Tessa Dare had a lot more potential as a published author than she realized.

Her first novel was ‘Goddess of the Hunt’ which was published by Ballantine. She eventually left Ballantine for Avon. Tessa, who splits her days between writing and working as a part-time librarian spends a lot of time producing stories set in the regency era.

She is drawn to this period because it has an interesting mix of historical and modern elements. The presence of balls and carriages allows her to craft plots that are comparable to fairy tales. However, she doesn’t have to work as hard to accurately portray the attitudes and cultures of her characters because people in the regency era had a lot in common with the people today.

The author loves writing talkative characters. This is because they enable her to indulge her love for dialog. She cannot get enough of scenes in which multiple characters congregate to argue. The silent types are more challenging. Though, she also appreciates them because of the rewarding turns their stories always take.

Even though she primarily writes historical romance, Tessa’s reading habits are not as restrictive. She reads everything from YA to mystery, and nonfiction. She counts the likes of Julie Garwood and Jane Austen among her favorite and most influential authors.

Best Tessa Dare Books

The author has been praised for her ability to expertly inject humor into serious situations with heavy emotions. Tessa’s best books include:

The Duchess Deal: The Duke of Ashbury survived the war. But the conflict left him with scars. When his fiance abandoned him, the brooding duke took one look at Emma, the vicar’s daughter, who entered his library in a wedding gown, and immediately decided that he would marry her.

The Duke had one objective, to father an heir. He had no interest in pursuing a real relationship with the woman. He expected Emma to bend to his rules. Unfortunately for the Duke, Emma has no intention of playing along.

Romancing the Duke: Isolde’s origins as the daughter of a famed author have done little to improve her prospects. As a child, Isolde was convinced that her life would follow the path laid out in the storybooks she read. She expected charming princes, glamorous balls, and fairy tale endings.

But now she is 26 and she has nothing. She has never tasted romance. More importantly, Isolde is impoverished, and she has no way of turning her fortunes around.
