The “Pet Rescue Mystery” series written by author Linda O. Johnston (who is also a lawyer) is from the crime and mystery genre (more specifically the cozy mystery genre, as there is not that much gore in the books). She wants to remind people that no kill only applies to the animals in her books not to the people that appear in them, as they are always fair game.

It stars Lauren Vancouver, who is the head of a no-kill animal shelter called HotRescues. The facility is located in Los Angeles, and to run it, Lauren is fortunate enough to have sufficient funding. This is actually a unique situation within the community of pet rescuers, due to the fact that many do not have enough funds to run their facilities.
The series began in the year 2011, with the release of “Beaglemania”; it was this year that she released the first two books in the series. After this, books came out regularly, about one a year. It has both stories and novels in it. This series is a spin off from the Kendra Ballantyne novels (from the “Pet Sitter” series). Lauren was first in two of these “Pet Sitter” novels, that are called “Howl Deadly” and “Feline Fatale”.
It comes from Linda’s love of pets, and her adopting at no kill animal shelters that are located in Los Angeles. She attends training sessions for rescuing animals, pet fairs (ones that bring attention to awful situations that pets can be in, like puppy mills). Linda has been places where they rescue pets and try and find them a loving home. She has heard many stories, some that were happy and some that were not so happy. This is one thing that she likes putting into her fiction.
BEST PET RESCUE MYSTERY BOOKS
For those readers looking to get into the “Pet Rescue Mystery” series by Linda O. Johnston, this section will help with that. It will go over the novels “Beaglemania”, “The More the Terrier”, and “Hounds Abound”.
Beaglemania: This is the first novel in the “Pet Rescue Mystery” series and was released in the year 2011. Human nature is usually what puts Lauren in danger’s path. Like the time she helps get a quartet of beagle puppies that got dumped down some drainpipe at an awful puppy mill.
A mill employee has a long history abusing dogs and has some beef with Lauren. His body is found after he was murdered, not too long after he made a threat against Lauren. She will have to find the actual killer of the guy or else she will be the one that is locked up.
The More the Terrier: This is the second novel in the “Pet Rescue Mystery” series and was released in the year 2011. Lauren learns that Mamie Spelling (her old mentor) hoards animals, and there is no one more shocked than her. She takes charge to get the animals re-homed, so they have a lot more room to move around and not be too cramped.
Things do not end there for Mamie. She gets accused of killing a pet shelter network’s CEO. Lauren’s strong determination to catch a killer and clear Mamie’s good name might just get a killer on her track.
Hounds Abound: This is the third novel in the “Pet Rescue Mystery” series and was released in the year 2012. Solving crimes and rescuing animals seem to go together for Lauren Vancouver (who is both manager of an animal rescue shelter and amateur detective) quite nicely .
This time, she gets involved in a killing that could just close a shelter that is both much needed and brand new. She will have to keep her animals not to mention herself from a killer that is on the loose.
