Gillian Flynn was born in February 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri, the child of two professors – her mother a reading comprehension professor and her father a professor of film. Given the career choices of her parents, it is of very little surprise the path that Gillian Flynn’s career has taken. After studying film and journalism at the University of Kansas, and then obtaining her Masters at Northwestern University, Flynn ended up at Entertainment Weekly in 1998, working first as a feature writing, before moving into the role of television critic. Her association with Entertainment Weekly ended in 2008, when she was made redundant.

However, it was while working at Entertainment Weekly that Flynn started her fiction writing, and her first novel, Sharp Objects, was released in 2006. Sharp Objects is a crime thriller, and is set in the fictional town of Wind Gap, Missouri, where a serial killer is picking off young girls. Chicago-based Journalist Camille Preaker is sent to cover the case by her boss, as Wind Gap is her former hometown. The story follows Camille as she returns to her hometown, as well as the relationship she has with her mother and younger sister. Camille not only sets out to cover the serial killer in a journalistic sense, but attempts to help the local sheriff out with solving the case. The book was a critical success, winning both the New Blood Fiction Dagger and the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger from the Crime Writers’ Association, as well as being nominated for the Duncan Lawrie Dagger.

Although Sharp Objects was a critical success, it is the book Gone Girl which cemented Flynn’s status as a growing star in the field of thriller writing. The story revolves around a young couple, Nick and Amy Dunne, who are out-of-work writers and whose five year marriage seems, from their telling of the story, to be somewhat strained. On the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing, and the book sets about detailing the search for her, as well as mounting suspicion on Nick as to being the culprit. What sets the book apart from many others in the field is how the story is told. Chapters are told in first person by either Nick, in the present, or Amy, through entries in her journal. The book then shifts narratives as the story unfolds. The success of Gone Girl as a book can also be partly attributed to the film adaptation, which stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy Dunne, and was directed by David Fincher. The film gained critical success and led to a huge boost in sales for the book and catapulted Gillian Flynn into the public’s conscious.

After completing Bishop Miege High School, she began working on various odd jobs some of which required her to dress up as an exceedingly giant yogurt. When she was growing up, Gillian’s father would take her to watch several horror films. Once she completed her high school education, Gillian Flynn joined the University, where she majored in Journalism and English. After graduating, Gillian Flynn spent more than two years in California writing for one of the trade magazines, which targeted human resource professionals. Later on, she relocated to Chicago, where she joined the Northwestern University. At the NorthWestern University, Gillian Flynn took a Master’s degree at the University’s Medill School of Journalism. After completing her Master’s degree, Gillian Flynn worked as a freelance at the United States News and World Report.

Best Gillian Flynn Books

Gone Girl: This book is one of the best performing novels by Gillian Flynn. In Gone Girl, Flynn introduces the readers to a newly wedded couple, Amy, and Nick Dunne. The novel begins as Nick discovers that Amy is missing during their fifth wedding anniversary. Upon arriving home he finds that the coffee table has been shattered, the books are scattered, and Amy is gone. Nick decides to call the local police. However, the police notice that something is amiss because Nick is constantly referring to his wife using the past tense. This novel switches between Nick’s narrative as the search for exceedingly beautiful and blonde Amy consumes the media.

It does not take long before these two stories are combined into one. The media and the police start to blame Nick for the disappearance. From time to time, he keeps on lying to the police, and according to him, the little lies did not matter at all. However, the reader can only wonder as to why is Nick lying to the police. Apart from the lies that Nick is telling, there is also something extremely odd about Amy’s diary. Amy’s version of the events in the past is much different to the one Nick is narrating. With that said, Gillian Flynn is an exceedingly great writer, who uses her writing finesse and exceedingly unique writing skills to entertain the readers. She expertly uses her narrators using stunning effects and in the process guaranteeing the reader a reread, once he or she has completed the story.
