Mary Balogh is a Welsh-Canadian writer responsible for numerous romance novels. Born in 1944, Balogh has fond memories of her childhood even though her hometown was bombed heavily during the war and the community had to ration resources.

The author describes her sister Moira as her soulmate. No one believes her when she tells them the sisters have never quarreled. They spent their days creating fictional histories and families for the few dolls they had.

They would also stay up late at night, inventing new adventures for the dolls. Their mother would often interrupt their conversations by calling up and telling them to go to sleep.

Balogh and Moira read voraciously. The author remembers consuming every Enid Blyton volume they could find. The sisters promised one another that they would become authors in the future.

They both achieved their dreams. Although, it took a while. Balogh’s parents were very progressive. Even though many people did not see the point in sending girls to school, the couple encouraged the girls to take their education seriously.

They also wanted Balogh and Moira to seek out satisfying careers. Balogh wanted to teach, which is why she moved to Saskatchewan in Canada.

She had secured a two-year teaching contract. The last thing she expected was for her blind date with Robert Balogh to lead to marriage. Before she knew it, the pair had started a family, which kept the author too busy to pursue her writing dreams.

Sian, their youngest child, was six years old when Balogh decided to add writing to her evening schedule. At the time, it was just a hobby. By then, she had already developed a healthy obsession with Georgette Heyer.

Balogh was enchanted by Heyer, and she couldn’t wait to tell stories similar to those Heyer had written in her Regency romance novels. Once supper was done and the dishes were washed, the author would sit at her kitchen table and write in longhand.

It took her three months to finish ‘A Masked Deception.’ Unfortunately, she had no idea what to do next. She wanted to submit the manuscript to a publisher but did not know where to find one.

But rather than giving up, she picked a novel, found the address for a publisher inside the cover, and mailed the book. Naturally, because she was an amateur, Balogh made a mistake.

She mailed the manuscript to a distribution center. But the person who found the manuscript read it, loved it, and sent it to the relevant offices in New York. The author received a two-book contract two weeks later.

In a way, Balogh succeeded specifically because she had no idea what she was doing.
