The Fargo Adventures are a series of novels written by the acclaimed American novelist Clive Cussler. The Fargo Aventures series centres around the husband and wife team of Sam and Remi Fargo, who are treasure hunters. Like the majority of Clive Cussler’s other work, the Fargo Adventures rely heavily on fast-paced action and mystery, as Sam and Remi Fargo travel the world hunting for treasure and solving mysteries, often mysteries steeped in history, while trying to avoid the peril and danger that goes with the territory. Like other series written by Clive Cussler, he has co-authored the Fargo Adventures, first partnering with Grant Blackwood for the first three books in the series, then Thomas Perry for the following two, and most recently Russell Blake.

The first book in the Fargo Adventures series is Spartan Gold, which was published in 2009, and which Clive Cussler co-authored with Grant Blackwood. We are introduced to Sam and Remi Fargo as they are exploring the Great Pocomoke Swamp, which is in the US state of Delaware. While hunting in the swamp, the couple stumble upon a German U-boat, which is one of the last things they had expected to find there. While exploring the U-boat, Sam and Remi come across a bottle of wine from the ‘lost cellar’ of Napoleon Bonaparte. This find makes them curious, and they decide to find what remains of the collection. However, they are not the only ones interested in their bottle, but not for its contents, but for what he may unearth because of it. The result is a treasure hunt for an ancient Persian treasure that has been missing since the 19th century.

The second book in the Fargo Adventures series is Lost Empire, which again was co-authored by Clive Cussler and Grant Blackwood. Lost Empire was released in 2010, continuing the adventures of the treasure hunting couple. The third book in the series, The Kingdom, was released in 2011, and was the last book in the series which was co-authored by Cussler and Blackwook.

The fourth book in the Fargo Adventures series, The Tombs, was published in 2012, and was the first book in the series to be co-authored by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry. We return to the lives of the Fargos as they are asked to help excavate a historical site by a friend of theirs. Their discovery could end up being one of the most important archaeological finds of all time – the final resting place of Attila the Hun, who was supposedly buried with his great wealth. This adventure brings with it great risks, and a whole ensemble of enemies, from a group of amateurs, to villainous Eastern Europeans whom pose great danger to the lives of our heroes.

The second book to be co-authored by Clive Cussler and Thomas Perry is The Mayan Secrets, which was published in 2013 and is the fifth book in the Faro Adventures series. This time the Fargos are in Mexico, searching for Mayan treasure, and again their lives are at risk as they search for untold riches.

Clive Cussler again found a new co-author for the Fargo Adventures series, and the first book to be published with Russell Blake was The Eye of Heaven, which is the sixth book in the series, and was published in 2014. The pairing followed that up in 2015 with the seventh book in the Fargo Adventures series with The Solomon Curse, which has our heroes visiting the Solomon Islands on their continuous hunt for long-lost treasure.

Imagine a relationship that plays out in some unusual location, far from the usual urban jungle. Then imagine mysterious places with historic significance. Add to that the writing skill of American adventure novelist Clive Cussler and what you get is the multi-millionaire Fargo couple, Sam, and Remi. Their pursuit of the wildest things takes us to a roller coaster ride on exotic locations like the Bay of Guadalcanal and Mayan archeology sites in Mexico.

Sam and Remi are like Ying and Yang, complementing each other’s skills. The husband-wife chemistry is a spot on match with the exotic adventures like hunting for ostrich eggs or skeletons. Together they work like a charm and flow through the challenges like butter. Their adventures take place in numerous locations, sometimes in the same book. Countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, China, Siberia, and Italy figure throughout the first book of the series and give the couple enough space to discover and re-discover their love for each other. Once the status-quo of their relationship is established, the series plunges into hard-core adventure mode. Along with their friend Rube Hayward, who works at the CIA and chief researcher Selma Wondrash, the couple sets out to turn the world inside-out. Rube Hayward is the moral support and he brings in the government connection to the couple’s adventures. Selma, on the other hand, is the technical pillar on which the couple relies on heavily.

Sam is a calm and cool-headed millionaire and is always hungry history’s unsolved mysteries. Remi is the fuel that fires Sam’s ambitions. Together they leave a trail that gets too dangerous to handle sometimes. The characters are interlocked deeply and the books focus on their relationships more than developing them individually. Yet, through some shocking events and classic dialogues, you be a fine judge of what Sam and Remi are made of.

BEST FARGO ADVENTURE BOOKS:

“Pirate” is the first and the most crucial book in the series. It introduces the various characters and their role in the series. The story is played out more under the water than on land. The centerpiece of the novel is an 800-year-old treasure. It has lured many but none can seem to find it. An ancient cypher wheel and a brutal murder loom in the backdrop. Will the couple get to the treasure?

The second classic piece is the “Spartan Gold”, a book that caught the attention of many critics. In the sleepy town near Delaware, the couple is planning an escapade. Their romantic hiatus ends hastily when they discover a Nazi- Germany U-Boat in the Great Pocomoke Swamps. Inside it, they find a rare bottle of wine with a secret message. The message was written by Napoleon Bonaparte himself after he plundered it from Persian king Xerxes the Great. Historic in some sense, this book will bring you a complex web of events that runs along and through the Fargo couple. Only this time, the Russian mafia wants them dead.

In “The Eye of Heaven”, the couple take a cool trip to the Antarctic. This book is actually one of the few books that’re published on Climate Change and we find out star couple has found a very unusual object due to the melting ice; a Viking ship loaded with Mayan artifacts. The artifacts are from before Columbus arrived and may hold the golden key to unlocking the secrets of the Mayans. Expect some sci-fi paragraphs, melted into a nice romantic chemistry between the couple. The Fargo adventure series is a nice way to add some spice to a relationship and this book vindicated this fact to the core.

  1. Will Russell Blake continue the series in memory of Clive Cussler? I can not think of a better way to honor a great writer by not letting his books series die.
