When she is first introduced in The House on Tradd Street, the first book in the Tradd Street series, Melanie Middleton is a 40-year-old real estate agent and she’s pretty good at her job.

The biggest complication in Melanie’s life is her psychic abilities. Melanie can see ghosts; however, she doesn’t like to talk or even think about it, not with the negative reactions the revelation could attract.

Melanie’s abilities are pushed into overdrive in The House on Tradd Street when she meets an old man, the owner of an old house whose listing she would like to land. Melanie connects with the man because they were both abandoned by their mothers as children.

When the old man dies, Melanie is shocked to learn that he left the house and a notable portion of his money to her. However, the old man’s Will stipulates that Melanie must stay in the house for at least one year before she can sell it.

That wouldn’t be a problem for Melanie except that the house has its fair share of ghost problems. Melanie is forced to confront her psychic abilities, learning along the way that her gifts give her the opportunity to not only help the dead pass on but to also solve difficult mysteries.

The Tradd Street books tell Melanie Middleton’s story. The 40-year-old is described as quite the competent and highly capable woman. However, most readers would describe her as ditzy.

Not only is she indecisive but it takes her far longer than the average human being to put the clues presented together to discover the truth behind the various mysteries. The heroine tends to elicit varied opinions from readers.

While some readers find her silly attitude amusing, others have complained about what they perceive as the childish antiques of an older woman who has not learned the ropes of adulthood and, thus, still acts like she’s in her 20s.

A critical aspect of the Tradd Street books is Jack Trenholm, an author who talks Melanie into letting him stay in her new house under the guise of researching his book when he is actually out to acquire the diamonds he believes are hidden on the premises.

Jack initially sets out to woo Melanie as a means of achieving his personal objectives. However, in the process, he becomes smitten by her. The relationship between Jack and Melanie drives the romantic aspect of these books.

Best Tradd Street Books

Karen White is a popular author whose Southern romance novels delve into her appreciation for history, old houses and the paranormal, with some of the best books in the author’s Tradd Street series including:

The Girl on Legare Street: Melanie Middleton can never forgive her mother. When Ginnette Prioleau Middleton abandoned her daughter more than three decades ago, it left scars that shaped Melanie’s life. But Melanie was sure she had moved on.

With her life so thoroughly consumed by her job and her lustful thoughts about Jack Trenholm, Melanie didn’t have the time to worry about the mother that abandoned her. So she wasn’t prepared for Ginnette to walk back into her life.

Ginnette is a psychic, just like her daughter. And she has come back to protect Melanie from an ominous premonition. It takes a lot of prodding from Jack to convince Melanie to join her mother on an adventure that will see them face off against a vengeful spirit at their old home.

The Strangers on Montagu Street: When Nola’s mother dies, she goes to live with Jack. Jack didn’t know he was a father. And now he must grow accustomed to being a single parent. Fortunately, Jack has Melanie to lean on.

Melanie wanted to welcome Nola with open arms. But then she realized that Nola was coming into their home accompanied by the spirit of her mother who is determined to watch over her child from beyond the grave.
