Dexter Morgan seems like a nice enough guy. When he’s first introduced in Darkly Dreaming Dexter, the handsome and charming gentleman is making a living as a member of the Miami Police Department whom he works for as a forensic blood splatter expert.

It isn’t until you look a little closer that you realize the truth. Dexter is actually a psychopath, a killer with a thirst for blood. Fortunately for Miami, Dexter is the nice sort of killer. He only goes after bad people, specifically criminals and psychotic serial killers like him.

Dexter Morgan’s little hobby began when he was a child. Harry Morgan, his foster father, was a police detective, and it didn’t take him long to realize what Dexter was and the dark desires he held. Any other person would have worked hard to help Dexter overcome his blood lust.

Harry went the other way. He chose to shape his son’s killer mentality into a tool that could be used to eliminate the scum of Miami. Since killing his first criminal, Dexter hasn’t looked back. And his job couldn’t be better. Being a forensic expert gives Dexter access to crime scenes which, in turn, help him find his next victims.

More importantly, as a forensic expert, Dexter knows how to mask his crime scenes, thus allowing him to operate unseen in Miami.

Dexter gets away with so many murders because he is a highly intelligent killer, one that has the capacity to track, locate and subdue other killers. That doesn’t mean that he is unstoppable. Over the course of the Dexter Morgan series, Dexter comes across a number of killers that are even more demented than he is.

When Dexter isn’t killing bad guys, he’s working hard to take care of his family and to keep them safe from his many enemies.

Dexter Morgan Awards

Jeff Lindsay won a Dilys Award for his first Dexter Morgan book. The author was also nominated for a Macavity Award.

Dexter Morgan Books into Movies/TV

The Dexter Morgan books were adapted into a television show in 2006. The show featured Michael C. Hall as a forensic expert who killed murderers and rapists in his spare time, specifically those murderers and rapists that escaped the Justice system.

The television show primarily adapted the first novel before going its own route and telling stories wholly different from Jeff Lindsay’s literary works.

Best Dexter Morgan Books

While Jeff Lindsay has been derided for his lackluster writing style, the Dexter Morgan series have been praised for creating such a complex character in Dexter Morgan, with some of the best books in the series including:

Dearly Devoted Dexter: Dexter Morgan is having a hard time balancing his hobby as an ethical killer with his day job as a forensic expert. With Sergeant Doakes having seen through façade, Dexter works hard to throw the detective off his trail.

Fortunately for Dexter, he has a girlfriend and two children who help him fight the stress. It occurs to Dexter that it might be time to put his murderous ways to bed. However, this consideration is tested when a psychopath that isn’t Dexter suddenly emerges and begins terrorizing Miami.

This new foe awakens the monster in Dexter as he goes on the hunt. Dexter knows that it will take a monster to catch a monster, and he is the monster that Miami needs.

Dexter in the Dark: Dexter Morgan is a forensic expert working for the Miami Police Department. Dexter is also a demented killer than hunts other killers. He has continued to operate in Miami undetected, this while holding down a job and taking care of his girlfriend and children.

For someone like Dexter, life is actually good. Things change when Dexter comes across a crime scene that brings the presence of a killer to his attention, a psychopath far more sinister than Dexter.

Dexter knows he is up against something completely new because even he is afraid. Dexter will have to move carefully if he is to defeat his greatest foe to date.

Other Book Series You May Like

While not quite the same, the “Mitch Rapp” Series by Vince Flynn is a great read. Mitch Rapp is a counter terrorism agent who works for the CIA and is deployed when threats against the United States arise. Mitch is often a last resort, the sort of operative that goes to some extreme ends to do what is necessary.

Fans of Dexter will definitely enjoy the “Hannibal Lecter” Series by Thomas Harris. These books tell the story of Hannibal Lecter, a doctor and psychopathic killer, and the people who take the hazardous risk of hunting him down.

What Is The Next Book in The Dexter Series?

There doesn't seem to be an upcoming book in The Dexter Series. The newest book is Dexter Is Dead and was released on April, 9th 2015.
