The story is written by Patricia Briggs. Her heroine, Mercy Thompson, is a shape-shifter. Every so often, a Native Indian Coyote god would inhabit her father’s body. It was during one of those possessions that Mercy was conceived.

Mercy’s mother was a white woman. When she lost Mercy’s father to an accident, the woman gave Mercy over to the friends of an uncle, mostly because she had discovered Mercy’s supernatural side and concluded that she had no business raising a shape-shifter.

Mercy was raised by Bran and his pack. Bran is the alpha of the North American werewolves. For a time, Mercy thought she could find a semblance of normalcy under Bran’s shadow.

But then she fell for Samuel, Bran’s son and things went horribly wrong. Mercy was led to believe that Samuel only wanted her for her coyote powers. While female werewolves were nothing new to North America, they couldn’t bear children.

That made Mercy a valuable mating tool for Samuel, or so Bran suggested. This revelation compelled Mercy to flee from Bran’s pack. When readers meet her for the first time in Moon Called, the first novel in the series, Mercy has found her place in the world.

She works as a mechanic in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She is also a member of the local pack led by Adam, her neighbor. Mercy’s life is a complicated one. She wants to maintain the peace between the humans and the denizens of the supernatural in her community.

And she will do whatever it takes to quell supernatural conflicts that threaten innocent human lives. That being said, she also prefers to steer clear of the political maneuverings of the supernatural community.

However, her gifts as a shape-shifter keep attracting the wrong kind of attention. It isn’t just her nose and her speed that werewolves, vampires, and the fae desire.

There is also the fact that she can detect certain types of magic while also repelling others.

Mercy applies a lot of caution in selecting the conflicts to which she will lend her considerable strength. But sometimes, she isn’t given much of a choice in the matter.

The Mercedes Thompson Graphic novels are direct adaptations of the Mercy Thompson books. For instance, the first volume is a comic book version of the Moon Called novel and it is primarily concerned with Mercy’s encounter with a werewolf boy that just escaped from a lab which had exposed him to torturous experiments.

Most of the graphic novels are quite faithful in their adaptation of Patricia Briggs’ original story. The only original work is the Hopcross Jilly story which follows the adventures of the Tri-Cities pack as they attempt to solve the mystery behind a trove of buried children’s bones.

The Mercedes Thompson Graphic novels do not place as much emphasis on Mercy’s love triangle with Adam and Samuel.

And she does what she can to maintain order among her kind, not to mention keeping their conflicts out of the ordinary lives of innocent humans.

Mercedes Thompson Graphic Novels Volume 2: People are dying. Others are being assaulted. The werewolves are fighting and they are not the only ones suffering. Mercy needs to put a stop to all of it. But that will require her to unravel a dark conspiracy.
