If you are familiar with Stephen Coonts, then you know that he primarily writes action-packed military fiction. And if you are familiar with Coonts’ books, then you will know that Tommy Carmellini’s first appearance was in the Jake Grafton books before he was spun off into his own series.
Tommy Carmellini is a former Jewel thief who became a CIA contractor. Jake isn’t afraid to work on both sides of the law, so long as he gets what he wants. When the character makes his first appearance in the series in Liars and Thieves, he believes that he has left his exciting life behind to become a bureaucrat. Tommy isn’t complaining. He gets to fly around the world executing somewhat hair-raising but relatively innocuous tasks. So he is getting the right sort of excitement for someone that is starting to wind things down.
Tommy has even begun planning for his cushy retirement, though his plans change when he is sent to post Guard Duty at a West Virginia farmhouse only to stumble upon a firefight that thrusts him into a conspiracy with consequences that will shake the foundation of the United States.
Tommy isn’t a CIA-trained operative. However, once his life comes under fire, he is forced to learn on the job, picking up the skills necessary to cut his way through the bad guys. Things only grow more complicated as the series progresses, with Jake taking a more active role in those more dangerous operations of the CIA and earning the legend that slowly begins to grow around his name.
Jake Grafton is a retired Admiral by the time the events of the Tommy Carmellini series roll around. Jakes plays a critical role in Tommy’s life, often sending him out on dangerous missions or even working alongside the former thief to save their nation.
Stephen Coonts’ decision to rely on factual occurrences of the past is typically met with mixed reviews. Some audiences enjoy the author’s ability to weave crucial moments of recent history into his stories. Other people think that he takes so many liberties with the factual events in question that he would have been better off working with his own original ideas.
The most notable aspect of the Tommy Carmellini series is Stephen Coonts’ decision to tell Tommy’s story through the first person perspective while relying on the third person point of view whenever the story shifts to other characters.
Best Tommy Carmellini Books
Stephen Coonts is nearly unrivaled in the arena of international thrillers and it is hardly surprising that his Jake Grafton Spinoff ended up garnering so much interest, with some of the best books in the Carmellini series including:
Liars and Thieves: Tommy Carmellini is a CIA operative that has made a living by walking on the wrong side of the law. A former jewel thief, Tommy’s work with the CIA has forced him to remain on the straight and narrow, but he isn’t afraid to take detours whenever the need arises.
When Tommy is tasked within posting Guard Duty at a farmhouse, he doesn’t expect to find the guards dead, and neither does he expect to escape an assault by American Commandos hell bent on killing everyone they find.
But that is exactly what happens. Fortunately for Tommy, his quick thinking allows him to escape the farmhouse with an attractive translator. However, his troubles are far from over. Someone is hunting Tommy. More importantly, there is a dark secret that a mysterious figure is determined to keep hidden at all costs, even if it means putting the nation in jeopardy.
The Assassin: Abu Qasim almost blew up a G-8 meeting in Paris. When he escapes the Americans, it falls on the shoulders of a group of powerful politicians and industrialists to go after him and his disciples before Abu Qasim can strike again.
When a Russian dissident in London is poisoned, Abu Qasim reveals himself to be a truly indomitable foe, which is why Admiral Jake Grafton sees fit to send Special Agent Tommy Carmellini out onto the battlefield to put a noose on the master of terror.
