Dewey Andreas was introduced to readers in 2010, the work of Ben Coes. A former Army Ranger and Delta operative, Dewey cannot seem to stay out of trouble. The hero is written to be a relatively ordinary individual who left the death and violence of his time in the army behind to live what he might term an average life.

The first book, Power Down, finds Dewey operating as the crew chief of an oil rig off the coast of Columbia. An attack by a terrorist organization would have killed everyone on board if not for the quick thinking and fast actions of Dewey who saves several crew members and then puts his dormant skills in action to track down the men responsible for the assault.

The Dewey Andreas books initially find Dewey working hard to steer clear of trouble. However, trouble always seems to find him. In some cases, Dewey’s past comes back to haunt him, forcing him to contend with enemies he thought were buried.

In other situations, Dewey is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, once he witnesses injustice, he is unable to let it go, showing a willingness to cut a trail across the globe if it gets him the bad guys.

After a while, though, Dewey stops fighting the inevitable and takes his place once more within the intelligence community, undertaking difficult missions to protect the United States. Dewey is what one might call an alpha hero.

Dewey is always the only person in the story that can save the day. Only Dewey seems to see the clues and the big picture, and he is the only one with the capacity and the will to do what it takes to stop incredible threats.

And the threats are rather incredible. Even though the author has been praised for the realistic nature of his action and violence, Ben Coes stretches reality when it comes to the things Dewey can do and the plots of the bad guys. There are definitely moments that require a suspension of disbelief so as to enjoy the story at hand.

Ben Coes, the author, is ex-Delta Force so he understands Dewey Andreas more than most people. The author’s books are designed to get the heart and the fist pumping.

Comparisons have been made with Vince Flynn and Brad Thor.

Dewey Andreas Awards

Ben Coes received a Barry Awards nomination for Best Thriller for First Strike, the sixth book in the Dewey Andreas series.

Best Dewey Andreas Books

The Dewey Andreas series often attracts mixed reviews because it stretches believability in some places, with some of the best books in the series including:

The Last Refuge: Kohl Meir is a Special Forces Commander from Israel that comes to New York looking to recruit Dewey Andreas. Meir learned that Iran had finally succeeded in crafting a nuclear device and their first attack would be against Israel.

Before Meir can recruit Dewey, mysterious operatives grab him and take him back to Iran with the intention of putting him on trial. Meir saved Dewey’s life at one point, so the former Army Ranger feels like he owes the commander. And he wastes no time in taking preparatory steps to infiltrate Iran with the intention of not only getting his friend out safely but also destroying Iran’s Nuke.

Without help from Israel or the United States, Dewey will have trouble getting past Abu Paria, Iran’s deadliest and most brutal operative.

Independence Day: Dewey Andreas might have screwed up his last two operations and lost his fiancé to murder, but he refuses to be sidelined from a mission designed to find the Russian hacker responsible for moving the money for Al Qaeda’s many cells.

The hacker, Cloud, has a girlfriend that a team has been assigned to capture. Dewey goes rogue and, after saving the girlfriend’s life, learns that there is a plan in play that could change the political landscape of the world. And Dewey only has three days to do something about it.
